Egyptian lawmakers want to ban fake hymen
CAIRO — Conservative Egyptian lawmakers have called for a ban on imports of a Chinese-made kit meant to help women fake their virginity and one scholar has even called for the "exile" of anyone who imports or uses it.

The Artificial Virginity Hymen kit, distributed by the Chinese company Gigimo, costs about $30. It is intended to help newly married women fool their husbands into believing they are virgins — culturally important in a conservative Middle East where sex before marriage is considered by many to be illicit. The product leaks a blood-like substance when inserted and broken.

"This product encourages illicit sexual relations. Islamic culture forbids these relations except within the confines of marriage," Bayoumi said. "I think this should absolutely not be allowed to be exported because it brings more harm than benefits. Whoever does it (imports it) should be punished."

In a country and a region where pre-marital sex is so taboo it can even lead to a woman's murder, the debate over the virginity-faking kit has revived Egypt's constant struggle to reconcile modern mores with more traditional beliefs — namely, that a woman is not a virgin unless she bleeds after the first time.

1. The only thing dumber than a 'fake hymen' that tries to be the real thing is
a 'fake hymen' that is a thin strip with an expiration/sell-by date stamped on it, sold by the company "Hi, men!".

:yoiks:

5. Not that dumb
when you consider that the lack of a hymen gets women and girls beaten, killed and ostracized.

2. That's rediculous.
This may be "a little too much info" for some... but not all women "bleed the first time"

Hell, I'm a guy and even I know this.

.....except within the confines of marriage,"

8. It's not too late to add "Breaking News!" to your title line.

It's tragic that such surgery has a reason to exist, and tragic that the "morals" of those in government compel them to make this action.

9. There still is surgery.
I kid you not. When I was in Catholic high school back in the fifties, a classmate who had sex with her boyfriend and then got dumped, told a priest in confession that she had sinned and that her boyfriend had dumped her. The priest told her not to despair. There was a surgery that reconstructed the hymen and when she got married her new husband never need know. :wtf:

Even she was shocked that a priest would suggest this deception. I'll bet he knew where to get a decent abortionist too. This was before Roe vs. Wade. After all abortion is a sin, but if you confess, you will be forgiven. She did eventually get married sans hymen, had children and lived happily ever after. Sometimes these cultural norms can lead people to do weird things.

10. I wonder if any girls at US Purity Balls feel the need for this?
I wonder if there are imports to the US for the Purity Ball crowd? You know, get a little rowdy with the virgin boy next door after the Xtian rock concert and suddenly you can't ever be loved by a man or your family ever again?

We KNOW that Middle-Eastern cultures often promote misogyny, we need to admit what our own cultures can do to the mental health of women also.

11. Sounds like the perfect gift at a "Purity Ball"
Let your daughter pretend to be chaste and provide her with the means to continue the charade.

13. This is fabulous!
What a great tool for women who live in misogynist societies to have. I don't know why the men are all in a huff; this will allow women to more freely engage in sexual activities, thereby giving the guys a break from farm animals.
