What did he do to deserve it?
He gave the world hope. Not just this country, but the world. The world was extremely nervous with the paranoid and maniacal Bush and Cheney in charge. They were as relieved as many American citizens when Barack Obama won the election. He had spoken to huge crowds in Europe and they were inspired by his words. He went to Cairo and spoke to the Muslim world. He was honest and truthful with them. They respected that. He agreed to talk with Iran, rather than just issue threats.

Also, most of the world leaders understand the situation he inherited in Iraq and Afghanistan and are willing to give him more time to resolve the wars than are many of the President's supporters in this country. They do not see him as a war-monger.

They also give great credit for putting America back on track with diplomacy and a new hope for the future. I can think of no one that deserves it more.

But of course, it's so fucking progressive to mock those who are having a hard time.

but Jesus, man... expectations are far too high in this climate of financial doom... we're all going to suffer... time to buck the fuck up.

You aren't alone. We all need to learn patience and selflessness if we're going to get through this. It's going to get worse, you know. How are some going to deal with that when all they can do is whine now... Jesus... you still have computer access... you aren't completely on the skids...

Maybe it's because I drive through Downtown Los Angeles' skid row every single day, and I've personally witnessed the steady and horrific growth in the homeless population first hand... but I have very little sympathy for anyone who is doing better than these people are and THINK they are so fucking bad off... and all they do is fucking whine... there are whole families in tents... children leaving for school in the morning, from tents, unclean... wearing the same clothes they wore for God knows how many days... and I see no lunch sacks or pails among them.

Anyone who is still posting on DU is lucky as fuck... don't forget that.

9. This is indeed a measure of how far the U.S. had fallen under Bush
Refloating a sinking ocean liner is no mean feat, and the trust that President Obama has re-built in nine months is nothing short of remarkable. The difference in our relations with the rest of the world is the difference between the bitter cold of deep winter and the first 70 degree day of the spring. Better days are ahead, for sure, but that first time you go out and leave your jacket in the closet is beyond price.

For the freepwits, nitwits, dimwits and dumbshits scoring at home, that makes the Nobel Prize score Democratic presidents and presidential candidates 4, Republicans 1.

16. Excellent post, thank you
The Republicans are loosing their minds over this and I love it. This is a great thing for this country, for Democrats, and for a more progressive future.

We can't have a peaceful future handed to us, it requires work. This President has begun the work, if we throw up our hands after 9 months, are so needy of instant gratification that we end up loosing elections for it, I guarantee you the future won't have the slightest possibility of being brighter.

What award would Romney, Palin, Pawlenty be getting for "peace" as they justified bombing Iran and God knows what other countries? We can't afford that, seriously.

Congratulations to the President, I am so happy he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I am happy for America, we might now have hope of being a real participant in the world rather than the most dreaded beast the planet knows.

18. 50% of the people I know are having a very horrible time
Funny thing is, those who are the worst off... out of a job for over a year... foreclosure... sick family members with no insurance... are the happiest about this.

I'm just glad the world is looking at us differently now... this is a good sign that people are thinking of peace and communication as a hopeful alternative to hate, saber rattling, drawing lines in the sand, and keeping twitchy fingers poised over nuclear war buttons.

33. It's vicarious fulfillment.
They have a hero. In some cases, he's a symbol of them and their cohort. He is their hero, and his glory is their glory. Conversely, any insult to him is an insult to them.

Certain cultural traits predispose a person to this kind of behavior, which is very much not in keeping with Enlightenment, rationalist behavior.

That path leads in one of several directions, none good. His ultimate apotheosis, a nasty thing in a democracy. He can be idolized, in spite of his short-comings, leading to a further split and balkanization in US society. Both of these can lead to incredibly stupid policy and political decisions. Or he can come to be seen as having clay feet, leading to disillusionment--a nasty thing, but the better of the options, even if it means that his actual accomplishments become underrated.

One immediate consequence when the "leader" is a deity and the people are so driven by vicarious honor is the attempt to impose blasphemy laws. Western civilization mostly lost such things under rationalism. Personally, my God, I think, is strong enough that he can take criticism so I don't have to cry that he's "violated" (like some two-bit prostitute) every time he's dissed. Some members of other religions, and even some minor Xian groups, can't bear to have their idol denigrated because it humiliates not their deity but the people. When such behavior is focused on a man, it ranges from the boorish to the fascist (whatever the political system).

he made compromises =12

but he hasn't closed guantanamo, and made a law that messages, pictures, general info about torturing in guantanamo is forbidden
to reach the usa, also he didn't want to meat the dalai lama (probably the least aggressive man on the world), and he didn't do anything for KYOTO,

35. you are right (BUT)
only nine months but we know now at the end of the nine months he already kept his promise 47 times
so let's take this as a standard, so this gives us 4 years = 48 months
9months *5 = 45 ... that will do so he kept his promise 47 now let's multiply by 5 =235
so this gives us a the end he will have 235 of 515 promises ...
this is only 46.63106%
... don't be made @ me

Maybe not everything he promised will be fulfilled EXACTLY how he promised it, maybe somethings CAN'T be fulfilled do you think he is a liar bent on deceiving the American people and screwing them over?

I firmly believe he is going to do everything he possibly can to deliver on everything he promised. It won't be fast enough or complete enough for some people but no one could do it well enough for everyone. Its so easy to sit back and complain but think about your dream president in this situation and really honestly assess if you think in this world they could do any better right now. I don't think they could.

He has already done one hell of a lot of good in the time he has been in office. Maybe not enough to fit your schedule but I think he is off to a damn good start.

I don't really care one way or the other about that. He's just a politician so that's what they do. What we do care about is his lack of honesty when it comes to health care. He made promises that he hasn't kept wrt this issue that is the most important issue. Instead, all we have are empty words rather than health care. Where is my health care?

This isn't a perfect world. He won't be able to deliver on EVERYTHING EXACTLY how he wanted to. Guess what, NO ONE could.

I am pretty pissed off that he didn't meet with the Dali Lama this week but I don't think for a minute he is a liar who has played us all for fools to get the presidency. Why don't you lobby your representatives and Senators to represent you on Health Care? That's what I am doing. This isn't a dictatorship. Its not like he can snap his fingers and get it done that way.

Do you think Clinton or Kucinich or Nader would be doing any better right now? Do you think they would be facing any more support from congress?

Its much easier to sit back and malign the president!

I can’t believe I am hearing fellow Kossacks complain about Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. I have read comment after comment of hand-wringing and worry about how it’s too soon and he hasn’t accomplished enough.

Come on folks – where have you been? He's addressed everything from climate change and women's health to nuclear proliferation and torture.

Does he have a lot left to do? Absolutely. The Republicans left the place in tatters. But don’t pretend for a moment that Obama hasn’t accomplished astonishing things.

In this “short time”, President Obama has completely overhauled foreign policy.

President Obama has restored America’s prominence in international diplomacy.

President Obama has reached out to the Muslim world ion a way that was previously unimagined.

Obama has stated "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges" to which the Nobel prize's nominating committee responded: "For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman,"

41. Yes they do
and they see us in a much different light now that Bush is gone. And like someone else said the Cairo speech was historic and I am sure a significant reason.

1) Appointed a Special Envoy for Middle East peace
usa started the war over there
2)Ordered the closing of Guantanamo Bay
still not closed
3)Prohibited use of torture
no he made a law that no message, picture, or prove may ever reacht the usa
4)Directed almost $1 billion for prevention and wellness to improve America’s health
how much did he put in the army ?
5)Signed an executive order to close CIA secret prisons
yes now they are privatised and still in Poland
6)Initiated international efforts to reduce mercury emissions worldwide
and didn't sign KYOTO
7)Committed to responsibly ending the war in Iraq
Yes and how far is he now ?
8)Led global response to the economic crisis through the G20, obtaining commitments of $1.1 trillion to safeguard the world’s most vulnerable economies
logic he's cleaning up bush mess
9)Renewed dialog with NATO and other key allies
because usa army is getting broke and he needs money
10)Developed the renewable energy projects on the waters of our Outer Continental Shelf that produce electricity from wind, wave, and ocean currents.

61. Attacking someone receiving an award...hmmm, very Kanye of everyone doing it
He neither lobbied for or expected the award, was entirely gracious in his acceptance, and those that want to jump up onstage and try to interrupt his honor are doing as much as Kanye West did recently to another award recipient - and looking just as badly.

But if you enjoy it, by all means. Wallow.
