My 'Girls Only' Cleaning Trolley

There are a lot of pretty ridiculous kids toys out there, and we've taken on the sexism they invoke before.

The My Cleaning Trolley is an amazing eleven piece cart to push around with all the cleaning supplies you could ever need! I'm all for teaching kids about cleaning--even making it fun.

But the big purple "Girls Only" stamp is just too much.

3. It's a great idea for children of both sexes.
If I were a mom I would buy this "toy" for my children.

But yes, the "girs only" label is insulting.

8. Well...
For one thing the company that makes it, Playgo, is based in Hong Kong. So you gotta cut them a little slack. Also I'm not sure how old that picture with the girls only tag is. On their website the only Cleaning Trolley set appears to be a gender neutral option, even has a picture of a little boy sweeping something up. Maybe the girls only is a name for a product line? The girls only line has the pink and purple one, while the boys only line has a blue and red one? Just guessing.

16. One Christmas I bought all three of my boys their own irons
Edited on Thu Oct-15-09 09:29 PM by SoCalDem
I was tired of them messing up mine, and they all accused each other of leaving gunk on the iron & ruining their clothes.. so my teen-aged boys got their very own real-life irons:) They also have their own personal clothesbaskets..color coded.. and color coded hangers too

12. It is for children. They want to do what adults do, and if they learn then,
Edited on Thu Oct-15-09 09:22 PM by bobbolink
they will be better at it when they are older.

Transfering our biases to our children doesn't help them grow.

edited to say... and BOYS need to learn this even more than girls. Which should be obvious.

9. I loved my cooking toys!
EZ bake oven was the best. I didn't have one of those kitchen sets but I liked playing with them at other people's houses.

I also had doctor dreadful, of course, and creepy crawlers! But those are "boy toys" so it's not very noteworthy.

Edited on Thu Oct-15-09 09:14 PM by Angry Dragon
Looking at this photo brought to mind a recent post on DU about a hotel chain firing all the cleaning staff and hiring replacements at lesser wage. Maybe it is just a toy to teach young children how to be maids for the greedy CEO's??
