http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2009/10/obama_hatred_angry_white_guys.html A fourth-grader rose with a question for the president of the United States at a "town hall''-styled assembly in New Orleans.
"I have to say, why do people hate you and why -- they supposed to love you, and God is love....,'' the nine-year-old Tyren Scott asked President Barack Obama.
"Well, now, first of all, I did get elected president, so not everybody hates me, now,'' Obama told the boy. "I got a whole lot of votes. I want to make sure everybody understands.
"But you know, what is true is if you were watching TV lately, it seems like everybody is just getting mad all the time,'' the president said. "And, you know, I think that you've got to take it with a grain of salt. Some of it is just what's called politics, where once one party wins then the other party kind of gets -- feels like it needs to poke you a little bit to keep you on your toes. And so you shouldn't take it too seriously.''
But that business about people "getting mad all the time'' may well be one of the legacies of Obama's first year as president, a year in which the White House has pressed for sweeping changes in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression, a year in which incendiary radio and TV commentators have gained growing audiences and which "town-hall'' forums such as the one the president held in New Orleans this week have been stages for hate-speech.
