Does anyone know how to make the new home page fit...
...horizontally in one ordinary-size browser window?

I like the new design but hate having to scroll sideways alla time.

Help, please?!?

beseechingly,
Bright

1. I don't know what browser you are using
try this: click on view, then click on full screen and see if that helps.

2. Ctl- in Firefox (and I think, newer versions of Exploder)
Or you can raise your screen resolution and go blind/get a headache : )

4. Nope, doesn't work...
All that does is make different bits of text smaller or larger. It's still way, way, way off in horizontal orientation. I'd say a good 40% wider than standard browser window width at the normal resolution that worked with the old home page.

frustratedly,
Bright

12. Indeed! Just wish I didn't have to do it every time...
...but at least I know how, now.

Seems to have something to do with the top video embed... it shows up as three panels, the outer two blank, the video in the middle one. Weird.

Loads that way each time I navigate onto the page, but going to the "view" menu and unchecking, then checking "basic page style" sorts it out.

resignedly,
Bright

13. What version of Firefox do you have?
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 01:25 AM by Breeze54
I'm using the newest 2.0.0.3

I never adjust 'the view'. Are you using Western Character Encoding?

I've never changed the text size either, since I installed FF.

I can see the homepage just fine. No distortions at all.

Go to: Tools/Options/Content/Default Font (Times New Roman size 16)- Click 'Advanced'

Make sure there's a check next to 'Allow pages to choose their own fonts' instead of my selections'.

See if that helps.

14. I have version 1.0.7, and never had a problem with the old home page...
...but it may not have all the video plugins of the newer versions. I have an older 'pute so I'm always iffy about updating stuff if it looks like it might eat hd space or RAM.

philosophically,
Bright

I think it'll work on an older computer. ;)
Depends on what OS you're using.

Up past my bedtime as it is.

Thanks again!

10. On firefox
ctrl +/- changes the text size.

Whenever something is wider than window it's usually because of an image. There are a couple of plugins that can help. Adblock can make the image go away and Imagezoom can shrink the image so it fits (as well as blowing up small images).

8. Try changing the resolution of your monitor
1. Right-click on a blank space on your desktop and select Properties.

2. When the Display Properties dialog box opens, select the Settings tab.

3. Move the Screen Resolution slider toward the "More" setting (the numbers will get bigger). Don't drag too far, just up it one or two resolution settings.

4. Click the OK button. (Depending on your computer's settings, you might have to restart your computer for the changes to take place.)

5. If your browser fonts now are too small, select larger text size fonts in the View menu.

I'm using a laptop with a 13-inch screen, and the entire DU homepage fits on the screen without browsing. My resolution setting is 1024 x 768 (which might or might not work for you, depending on your monitor).

17. You shouldn't have to change your settings for a web site
Not all monitors can handle a specific setting...plus, not everybody wants to go blind from reading tiny little text on a website. :O

19. They took a good thing and messed it up.
Just like New Coke!

There must be a universal human tendency to change things, under the guise of "improvements," even when there was nothing wrong with the original and the change makes it worse.

Many are responding to complaints about the new design with some form of "There, there, calm down, we know you don't like changes, but you'll get used to it". Not only is this condescending and patronizing, it also ignores, Bush-like, the actual, real problems being raised about the new page, such as the irritating new scrolling problem discussed here and the "teaser" posts that contain part of the first sentence of the item instead of 3 or 4 paragraphs.

I read and enjoy DU every day. I am not opposed to changes per se, but I just don't see how this one makes my daily experience better. I can clearly see how it makes it worse.

18. Easy--use the Opera browser!
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 05:03 AM by silverojo
It has a "fit to width" function. Just hold Ctrl, then hit F11, and the page is automatically fit into your monitor's resolution. Check this out...here's the DU home page viewed with a mere 640 x 480 resolution, in Opera. Click on the image to enlarge:

NO SCROLLING NECESSARY! :D
