ESPN Radio "Jock" questions NBC hiring Olbermann |
|
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 05:02 PM by Va Lefty
Colin Cowherd said today that Keith Olbermann was "about as middle-america as a trans-gender film festival" and that he could not speak to "NFL fans". http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2007/04/schrutebag-vs-olbermann-round-1.htmlIt might be good to let Mr. Cowherd know how WE feel. His e-mail address: http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/news/story?page=herdmail

I'm gonna have a real hard time taking him seriously.

18. Dan interviewed Keith today on this subject; |
|
Dan made the point that no other announcer on the show had ever been questioned as their politics or the region they came from. Why this is this an issue when it has nothing to do with sports? Just shows how far the muck raking has gone. When personal politics come over to the sports arena, I'm selling the T.V.

6. forget it, he won't listen |
|
Cowherd is hardcore wannabe tough-guy right wing (just one notch below Michael Savage, except he mixes in a lot of football talk)...I remember when I first started listening to him when he took over Kornheiser's slot, and he dedicated an entire 20 minute segment for bashing F/911, Michael Moore, France, and anyone that didn't think Bush was an OK guy after F/911 won the best film award at Cannes...Mind you, this was just two days after Moore had won it, so no one in the U.S.A. had even seen it yet...Spending 20 mins politically railing against a movie he hadn't even bothered to see yet told me all I needed to know about him...haven't given him a listen since...The bar was already incredibly low in sports talk radio, and ESPN just keeps digging underground

14. I agree. In fact, he will take all of your emails as a compliment/. |
|
He's said before that if someone emails him to insult him or disagree, he knows he's got them, so he's doing something right. I can't handle the guy. It's not his politics, even, it's his complete idiocy about sports. He's on my radio on my drive to work, so I catch him sometimes when I get sick of the AAR PSA announcements. I can't listen more than a couple of minutes. He's obtuse, he's rude to his callers, he's got no understanding of sports at all, and thinks he's the only one who does understand it.
I wouldn't waste time emailing him. He's so vain, he'll think the emails are about him. He'll be a forgotten name and a bad pun long before Obermann retires.

politics aside, he just has a shitty show, and he's NEVER right about anything he bloviates about...granted, that makes him just like 90 percent of the other sports talk shows, but he has such a disgustingly ugly style he makes Jim Rome look like Dick Schaap

said something to the effect that "he may have tipped his hand as to his political beliefs" that is a paraphrase, I don't know the exact quote but that was the general idea

Here in the DC Metro area he replaced Tony K briefly right around the time of F/911. He is both a republican asshat and a horrible all around radio host. Thankfully he bombed here in DC and IIRC he was off the air not to soon after. He sucks and is not worth the correspondence. It speaks ill of ESPN that they employ him.

Football has been considered the "possession of the right-wing" since at least thirty years ago when I was growing up. You know -- manly men, working with discipline and near-military precision, out to crush and maul their opponents to bring victory to their school or town? Exactly the thing that could be held up by right-thinkin' folks as the exact opposite of them long-haired liberal hippie faggot pinkos. :sarcasm:

28. So What Did KO Say About Donovan McNabb??? |
|
Oh that's right...that was a comedian playing the role of sports commentator for Disney. And who did they replace him with? Another right wing asshat who ceased being funny when the last of his liberal writers quit. That's Disney...the same company that owns ESPN, ya know...and also a competitor to NBC. IRC, the radio network also has a contract for the Sunday night games...thus maybe this turdbowl was trying to reach the wingnuts out there to tune into their broadcast.
Either way, Olbermann's credentials as a sports journalist are solid. I was expecting a right wing blowback about this...and here it is.

Keith will be a perfect fit for doing some football analysis! He was doing ESPN YEARS ago, and he probably knows more about baseball and baseball history than a lot of the other talking heads they have on that station every season. Keith isn't going to go out there and make an ass out of himself. He will know his stuff, and he will have it down so well he will probably have some great insights... As ALWAYS!
Personally, I look forward to hearing his commentary when the Broncos play on Sunday night halfway through the season.

and you can tell by my name I'm a BIG sports fan (NY Jets)but I haven't watched a full hour of ESPN since Keith was on MSNBC last time and left.It was during the Mark MacGuire Sammy Sosa HR chase in '98-the same time that KO quit MSNBC because of having to look at that banner "White House In Crisis day 335"
Back to ESPN yea they jumped the shark right around that 1998 mark for me

and Keith refuted them by pointing out all the credentials he had to do this work (including having covered a Super Bowl for Fox Sports) vs. the paltry credentials Dan informed him Cowherd had.
Oh, but he's not the only one. NewsBusters is also enraged at this "liberal" co-opting of NFL football coverage.

40. Colin Cowherd??? He sucks! |
|
I was a fan of Tony Kornheiser's ESPN Radio show. It was all-around great listening. Then ESPN ditched him (allegedly) and in his place went with Cowherd (so I've seen this Sam Seder-type scenario before). I tried listening and thought it was the lamest, most amateurish and unfunny radio show I have ever listened to. And this guy didn't know jack shit about sports!
I'm not saying this because of what he said about Olbermann. I mean, Cowherd absolutely sucks, and I'm shocked he's lasted this long. He can't even carry Olby's jock. Olby helped turn SportsCenter into a broadcasting icon, and he's even called the Olympics and the World Series. What has Cowherd done besides do some silly morning zoo shtick?
As far as ESPN Radio goes, Patrick and Olbermann are still the best they've got. The rest I could really give a shit about.
