that the Major who started shooting was about to be deployed to war and was upset about going. Smith showed some class in not wanting to release his name until it's confirmed by the U.S. military.

10. Private retribution by 3 or so individuals. The "leader" was a Major

in the US Army around 40 years old, 2 or 3 others involved, military also.
Individual craziness, not really political at all.
The Major seems to have been the only shooter. He was about to be sent to Iraq.

ADDED: The shooter was evidently a mental health officer, maybe a doctor?

15. I am so sick about this incident, I can't even talk about it.

For the injured, for the dead, for the families of the injured and dead, for the military personnel who lost comrades in arms, for the shooter who had clearly gone over the edge, for the Muslims who will pay for this even though they had nothing to do with it, for all of these and us, I feel sorrow and an inability to even talk about this painful event.

I don't know why the shooting may have occured. However I have a hunch about the media coverage:

The Democrats have extended Unemployment benefits and home tax credits which is something people might like and admire them for. The Conservative media may not like the good press they, (the Dems), might get from this, and so the issue of the shooting, is given headline status due to it's shock appeal thereby blowing away the story of the Dems doing good for people.
