Edited on Tue Nov-17-09 06:02 PM by JuniperLea

Or when he had a pajama party with foreign leaders?

7. I think all of this handwringing over bowing is ridiculous.
Ignorance and political bullshit say I. Bowing is not necessarily a sign of prostration. It is also a sign of respect. It is a ceremonial greeting to display manners and respect for other cultures. Our President would not be allowed to prostrate himself or herself to the leader of another country, that much is true. President Obama was not bowing in prostration. He was bowing as a respectful and culturally sensitive greeting to a foreign dignitary.

I'm not really going to bash W regarding his greetings to the King of Saudi Arabia, but their relationship was definitely more a relationship of prostration. Bush did not bow to the Saudis, but he sure did kowtow to whatever they desired.

8. This whole attitude of American exceptionalism got us into many of these messes
We have a great country but that doesn't put us above showing deference to the leaders of other countries.

10. Other cultures don't shake hands
But they do when they come to the White House. If they didn't, Tweety would be screaming about that.

This Americancentrism is what Obama is doing a lot to counter. This kind of statement by Tweety, Cheney and the rest shows the rest of the world we are self-centered pricks still. Or some of us are.

13. Has it occurred to anyone that maybe Obama was leaning over because
the emperor is the size of a leprechaun and Obama is very tall? Since I'm very short myself, I notice that tall people often lean over when we are talking to each other.

16. For the love of gawd. ANYONE with a modicum of knowledge about
multi-cultural etiquette knows that bowing in Japanese culture has several purposes. Bowing is a show of respect, and is also analogous to a handshake.

President Obama executed a correct and proper bow to the Emperor of Japan. At least he didn't bend over and take it up the ass like bush* did from the Saudi.

we are not the end all be all, and those who try to tower over others and think they are above others soon find out their folly one way or another.

23. I haven't read through the entire thread yet
so forgive me if I'm posting a duplicate opinion.

Tweety's comments (and so many others pissed off about this none issue) really just goes to show how ignorant we are as a culture. These pundits who are sucking the life out of this country, lack the respect, honor and recognition of tradition of any culture outside the US damn of A. They're the embarrassment to this nation, not our President.

26. Sure they do, when etiquette calls for it.
The American ambassador to the Court of St James bows to the monarch when presenting credentials. (Even John Adams, the first US Ambassador to Britain, bowed when presented to George III...and exited the royal presence walking backwards, no less, as etiquette and protocol dictated that no-one turned his back to the monarch.)

27. Hey Chris, you don't get to decide what Americans do
I know that probably comes as a big shock to you being on TV and no doubt thinking that you're way greater than you really are, but it's true. Americans are a diverse bunch and lots of us really don't give a shit if some of us choose to bow.
