Liberals are flirting with the politics of self-destruction... |
|
Liberals, who protested for eight years against the wars of George W Bush, are now being asked to support the Democratic President in his quest for war. This is putting some of the President's most avid supporters in a bind. They refuse to support this war. And there is the danger that they might refuse to support this President in the next election.
If the liberals indeed were to "sit out" the next election, the Party and the country would suffer greatly. Most likely, the right-wing, evangelical, war-mongers would regain power. The Democrats could blame the liberals for their defeat. But, they could have prevented such a disaster. They could have changed course just a bit.
Hopefully, the situation will be much improved by 2012? It is unlikely to be much improved by 2010. Only in defeat will the liberals be appreciated. It would be the epitome of a pyrrhic victory for the liberals. The President needs to lead.

1. My republican brother informed me that he loves what Obama is doing |
|
and so do his friends. Because he knows it will cinch the 2010 and 2012 election for the republicans. and as long as the Dems continue republican lite policies, it will.

12. Same with my republican brother. |
|
He just sent his son-my nephew over to Afghanistan and may have to head back to Iraq himself. But I know my brother has put this all on Obama's shoulders now. Just hope to god my nephew makes it home ok.

Thought I'd do my part to put your post in positive territory. Not sure what will happen in 2012, but if VA is any indicator, things do not look good for a Democratic Party that remains under the thumb of the Blue Dogs.

and that's something I would be unable to live with, despite the possible ramifications.

13. Most of the people who support war today supported it yesterday, too.. |
|
This is all about fresh justification for past mistakes, not some new insight. There is absolutely no doubt that the Democratic Party is now the home away from home for "moderate" Republicans--from warmongering to bankster bailouts, the right couldn't be more pleased!

8. The Republicans, Moderates and Independents will vote Democratic. That's the plan, right? |
|
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 11:19 AM by FormerDittoHead
I figure this is what they think:
Fuck the progressives, let's appeal to the middle, because if we go to war, don't raise taxes on the rich, and only pay lip service to the progressives with a joke of a health care bill, then REPUBLICANS WILL FUCKING VOTE FOR US!
We, the people leading the Democratic party, can do any fucking thing we want to secure our future corporate board seats, because the progressives will keep GIVING US MONEY AND VOTING FOR US - WHERE ELSE DO THEY HAVE TO GO?
Great plan there.

decisions, then us LIBERAL democrats will vote for only LIBERAL DEMOCRATS.
Yes, our tent is too damn large when we allow the corporate branch RULE our party.
No amount of GUILT TRIPPING and INTIMIDATION will force us to vote again for another "corporate democrat" AT ANY LEVEL. You want to place blame? Look in the mirror.

I've read over and over and over again in GD/P that the liberal vote is "in the bag" in 2012. They honestly believe this.

19. I don't think it's the center. It's not the center in anyone's world but Republicans. |

and we all know they live in a special little bubble of reality.
In his camaign promises he claimed that he would not be afraid to correct his actions where things were going wrong. He will need to correct this. It leads to nothing more than waste.

23. Exactly the point. The "Center" is meaningless as long as the right keeps moving the mark further to |
|
the right. That is why those who stand for the center stand for nothing.

Sometimes people see what they want to see. I am trying to make the point that liberals have more power than they think they have. They just don't know how to use it.

21. So in other words you want us to become hypocrites. |
|
I was against the war when Bush started it, and I'm against the war now that Obama is escalating it. I seriously hope that the Democrats don't take my vote for granted. My vote goes to whoever represents me not the corporations. I just want the Dems to act like Dems and end this war, pass real health care reform and work to help the workers.

If you stand for what you believe, the Democratic Party will suffer. I am not altogether convinced that is a bad thing. We don't need another Republican Party. We are Democrats for a reason.

|
The "Centrists" who threw it all away in 1994 and 2000 by acting like Republicans and ignoring their Liberal Base are the ones guaranteeing self destruction.
Should we Liberals just blindly support politicians who are working AGAINST the economic and social values of The Left?
