from the San Francisco Chronicle:

Tom Abate, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More Americans shopped online on Cyber Monday, but probably spent less on average than last year, echoing a trend that prevailed on Black Friday as the holiday season started off with overall sales on par with 2008 levels.

The National Retail Federation estimates that 96.5 million Americans shopped online on Monday, up from the 85 million in 2008, but the average shopper spent about 12 percent less than last year, according to Web-tracking firm Coremetrics.

The retail federation said 195 million Americans shopped at stores and Web sites over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, up from 172 million last year. However, the average person spent $343.31, down from $372.57 in 2008.

More buyers spending less money put Black Friday weekend sales at $41.2 billion, versus $41 billion for 2008.

"In this economy, even is a fairly strong number," said retail federation spokesman Scott Krugman. ...........(more)

3. Same here
CM was a total bust. The prices weren't good at all and the stuff that was put on sale was crap they couldn't sell earlier in the year.

Will the corporate overlords be pleased if people overshop on credit with money they don't have, and won't be getting only to file for bankruptcy before paying it off?

No, of course not.

Would they be happy if people overshop on credit with money they don't have, and won't be getting only to die before paying it off?

No, of course not.

There is no way to make the corporate overlord's wishes and visions comport with reality.

Sooner or later they will have to face the fact that they are seriously deluded in their view of the world.

"Cyber Monday sales rose 14% this year compared to 2008 and consumers also bought nearly 30% more items per order versus last year, according to research firm Coremetrics"
