Gen McCaffery on MSNBC.. says this is going to be a 5 to 10 year war...
.. and will cost $5-8 Billion a month.

I don't see how this will be sustainable in a jobless economy.

1. War profits trump all.
I think his estimates are conservative.

2. McCaffery has spun so much for the neocons over the past 9 years
that he should be fall down dizzy. I heard that asswipe, who was for the wars before he was agin 'em during the last election season, and now he's for 'em again. I don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth is anything more than keeping the war business afloat and himself in the public eye. War appears to have become lucrative for generals.

3. Sustainable?
All that is necessary is for a defeated, irrelevant people to stay beaten and continue to whimper and cringe like runts. I speak of course of Americans.

4. It's already been a 9 year war
So does that mean one more year, or is he only counting forward?

Fuck this madness.

8. It was predicted to be a 30 year war
so we're only 8 years in.

13. what's ten more then, right?
Of course when a General says "it'll take ten years" what he really means is it will take a long, long time. He doesn't know. He can't possibly. It will take so long that no one can predict what will be happening either here or there, but if he told you how long it could really be you'd never go for it. That part he knows for certain. So let's just say "ten years".

You know the Pentagon is budgeting for a 50 year war in the Islamic crescent. True fact. They may not be planning to fight in Afghanistan for 50 years, but it's difficult to see how they would give up Afghanistan as a base for the rest of their plan. There's no other place we have access to over there like Afghanistan. We're supposed to be out of Iraq at the end of 2011 (we'll see). And no other country that we lease bases in -and that's a lot of countries in the region- will allow us to do anything we want with regard to numbers of troops, kinds of equipment, what they're used for, etc. Afghanistan, as Obama's most recent move indicates, has no government that a Western power is obliged to respect. We can put a million troops in there for use against any target (cough Iran cough) we can put in heavy main battle tanks if we wish, we can station nuclear weapons there - we can do anything we want for any reason and the "Afghan government" can't say anything about it. Other countries in the region maintain controls on our troop levels and exact rent money on our bases. Afghanistan is ALL OURS for the projection of power against ANY regional target, as we choose.

5. Do the US coffers have too much money or something? Do they need to piss it away?
I don't understand. Can't they get their heroin without war?

10. Hey Leatherneck
Isnt it funny how we always here from McCafferey and Keane, but we don't hear from Zinni, Van Riper, or those talking common sense. Look what the media did to Scott Ritter.

11. That would make it
a 15 to 20 year war, given it has been almost ten years already.

At 5 to 8 billion a month, that will bring the total bill to around $2 trillion. This number is, of course, nonsense, and it will be probably double that.

We are now on the cusp of being in the longest war in US history. Apparently, we see the Hundred Years War as a challenge.
