Honest question. Who is hiring? You need not name the specific company, but are you aware of anyone - private sector, public sector, or non profit - who is hiring?

I see "help wanted" signs, but always in places where you know damned well you would not have applied even if you were a high school or college kid, were still unemployed for the summer, and it was early July.

Have any jobs materialized since all the way back to when this shit economy went bust on Idiot Son's watch? Any jobs at all? I heard about 600,000 of them, but haven't heard where they are or what kinds of jobs.

So ...... who is hiring?

1. My husband was hired at the end of August.
I'm not sure if that counts as part of this, but he is an electrical engineer and got hired as such by a company in Connecticut.

3. A friend at Nestle said all they were hiring now is interns at basic
slave wages with no guarantee that after the 3 year evaluation - they would be a regular employee.

Meanwhile, I'm reading books on turning the backyard into a mini-farm.

San Diego had 900 real jobs in the medical field
last month.

They were the FIRST positive growth in 18 months.

Does that count?

And actually never stopped. I am judging this not by any 'jobs available' news, either internal or external. Instead, I am referring to the 'welcome these folks to the company' e-mail that comes out pretty regularly.

The other side of this is that the same company lays people off just as frequently. If your area stops making money... bye!!!

9. You're supposed to cheer about those leading indicators.
You're supposed to cheer that the technical recession is over. Its all cold and technical.

Except under bridges.

There, its just cold.

10. My company hired 3 people this year and 3-5 interns. Also, head hunters call me
everyday. There is a demand (in Northern VA) for electrical-, mechanical-, and civil- engineers. These are jobs that are not easily outsourced due to both the need to understand local regulations/ building codes and the ability to go to construction sites to investigate conditions or solve problems.

12. Not many around here (Knoxville, TN) that I know of.
I've sent out over 100 resumes and applications to every architect I could find since I came back here 7 months ago (I'm a drafter with 24-years experience), as well as to many big and local retailers. My best catch so far has been one architect who gives me occasional work (averaging about 15 hours over the past eight weeks).

13. The small company my husband and I started just hired 2 people
and we'll be searching for a 3rd in a few months, if not sooner. It doesn't make a big difference to the economy overall, but it feels good to finally be stable enough to add more people (and hopefully not have to continue working 12-15 hrs/day like we have for the past two years). 2008 kicked our ass and I was afraid we weren't going to make it. Here's to hoping we continue this trend in 2010.

14. Depends on what you call a real job. I know a supermarket
chain that is & has been hiring, and not only the minimum wage jobs like stocker, but bakery, meat dept., produce, etc. My husband recently retired from one of their stores, and they were always looking for people who were willing to take pride in doing a good job.

20. My company is doing great, and looking to hire entry level PR associates...
The crisis communications business is booming, as one might imagine. Not a lot of M&A going on, but IR and BK work is up.

I understand from several employment agency owners I know that temp hiring is up, which makes sense in a recovery situation. One agency owner, who until now has only done permanent, full-time placement, has expanded his business to include temporary employees.

My wife got a job at one, doing clerical work. They ran the ad for a long, long time. It's a casual position, but she's getting more hours than she really wants. Pay's actually very decent for the work and the area.

Medical staff positions are crowding out the job sites.

Also, commission-only sales jobs. Because they don't have to pay, they will take anyone.

27. Not around here, of the 30 or so craigslist postings, 25 are scams,
the other local helpwanted type sites are posting tops 2 a week and one is always for an insurance agent, the other is usually National Guard. The state jobs site has probably the most reliable for real jobs but they are 10 a day, mostly requiring advanced nursing or medical experience or degrees. Or conversely if you want into the field with no experience, you can get 7.50 to take care of disabled or elderly. Seems there's an increase in demand for in-home care, but it seems rarely to be full time (ie no benefits).

31. police and fire are hiring
it's quite competitive (as it always is during recessions), but they are hiring.

my grandfather got a job with NYPD during the great depression and it was extremely competitive. there were plenty of phd's, and former high paid professionals taking the test.

35. My company is always hiring
This is due to growth, expansion and the need to ensure a positive customer experience. And the wages are not "crap" wages, they offer health insurance, educational benefits, 401k (that they have NOT stopped matching) paid weeks vacation and get short and long term incentives. Plus I forfeited my career as an educator to assume my current position. This decision was based on the fact that I would and do make more money!

Also: Just saw where 2 of my local factories were hiring individuals to fill new shifts being added. So in short yes I do know of a lot of companies hiring. The only real problem that I see is that many of the jobs (minus the two factories I wrote about) require some sort of certification or specific skill but many of the unemployed, including my best friend, lack those skills or degrees. All he did was work in a factory and he is having a hard time finding work. I have finally convinced him to go back to school to obtain a specific trade.
