12. ask him how many he intends to keep in there and how many mercenaries
we will continue to pay for and how long the mercs will be there

dont you recognize pre elction politics when you see it?

right now hes working on gaining the neocon votes with this stupid surge

and they love it

"Two prominent Bush administration officials are publicly praising President Obama for his decision to send additional troops to Afghanistan.

In an incredibly rare occurrence, the Republican National Committee hosted a conference call on Tuesday in which the featured speaker, Dan Senor, a former Bush spokesman in Iraq, applauded the White House and said he was "quite encouraged by the president's decision."

after that, he gets to 2011 and pulls a bunch of our troops out, perhaps he will have a HUGE MISSION ACCOMPLISHED BANNER behind him. But will they ALL be out? oh hell no, we have to keep permanent bases there just like we did in Iraq

and are doing now with our HUGE embassy we built there and the mercenaries and soldiers that are STILL in Iraq

and then we have to make SURE our PUPPET govt we installed in both places does what we WANT

this is politics, and anyone with a mind can see thru it.

But I'm on the verge of re-adding everyone who was there.

I am waiting to see what he says tonight, so we can talk about a concrete plan and facts not rumors. Even if I disagree, I am not going to run around like a chicken without its head.

The problem is some here think they are "speaking truth to power" by posting on DU. Others, like me and I'm sure you too, understand that DU has no effect on what Obama will or won't do, or what anyone else in DC does. So what is the point in screaming and shouting and getting everybody worked up over bullshit? It doesn't do anything but piss people off and cause arguments between people who probably agree on more than they disagree.

68. Exactly...
It reminds me of the health care polls... when presented with "Obama's Plan" everyone hated it... when presented with the individual facts, everyone applauded it.

We sometimes move liberal media, but that's it. Posting here merely preaches to one choir or the other. The actions taken, however, are strong and valid. Posting on DU is NOT an action... but some poor deluded DUers thinks it is.

Their minds are made up based on the media... there will be no changing that. At this point Obama could work a miracle, and he's still in the shit house.

13. So let me get this straight....
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 04:34 PM by FrenchieCat
While the Afghanistan War continued for 8 years, it wasn't that big an issue,
and in fact, it appears that if Obama wouldn't have called for this formal review,
no one would have really given a shit if we would have continued status quo
for a few more years.

But, since OBama decided to call a review, to actually come up with a new strategy
for Afghanistan in order to take action and wrap up this protracted war,
now he is the bad guy? He is being treated as though he is declaring war,
when in reality is that he is shifting strategy to clean up this shit left behind.

How is it that those who are so opposed like crazy to this war today, didn't seem to give much of a shit in October, although the war was going on right under their noses, and had been for 8 years, without an end in sight or a strategy....?

Why is it that when Obama determined to provide us with a strategy and an end game, all of the sudden
the natives are carrying their head in their hand cause their hair is on fire, acting like this man started this war.

If someone is going to tell me that there is more concern because 30,000 additional troops are going in, the question then become, would it have been any better if the 30,000 saw combat through rotation rather than coming in as added force? And why didn't the soldiers who are already there without the 30,000 count for less?

Last question: What do you think the hysterical dramatics and insensed outrage of what we have always known about what Obama would do, really truly about?

39. I don't believe you.
I think no one cared about the Afghanistan war much until the kool kids decided you should care.
Because how do you explain that no one gave that much of a shit when he sent troops in there a few months ago? Why is providing the American People with a rationale, a strategy, goals and and end game after a review so terrible?

I understand the pacifist being pissed, but many of them didn't vote for Obama specifically because they didn't believe he would end the Iraq war, let alone the Afghanistan war.

Why are some posters showing photos of bloody carnage, and why is anyone who still supports Obama is being called fucked up names? Why wasn't that the case in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, September, October and most of November....cause the war has been going on since and before then.

I've been called a warmonger today...
and I find that fucked up.

Why such fervent "concern" for our soldiers now, soldiers who have historically voted for the Repugs
(who send them to war) in the majority, as though they need protection from big bad Obama?
It almost smell like the "concern" the Right Wing uses about the unborn.

is that it wasn't THE biggest issue, because we had the gift of Iraq. But let me remind you that war sucks, and I, with my limited understanding, think that Afghanistan is not a "good" war that should be fought.

But what I am observing here is near hysterics,
and it doesn't add up, period.
There are too many reasons that there should be no surprise,
and that the sane ones should want a fucking strategy and an end game...
something we have not been given before.

56. Are you talking about abortion or what? Cause that's what it sounds like.
Soldiers are paid to fight. They join to serve.
They have known that we were at war for the last 8 fucking years.
A large segment of them voted for George Bush and Dick Fucking Cheney Twice!
They ain't no fucking embryo. These folks know what they are doing,
and they don't need your mouthful of protection
as much as they need your tax dollars so they can earn a decent living
considering what they have to do.

Like the police and firemen, they protect us....
and what we are supposed to do is put someone in the White House
that is going to have a strategy, goals, the right equipment and a fucking end game
before ordering anymore of them into the 8 year old theater of that Afghanistan has been.

Don't use soldiers as the reason that what Obama is doing is wrong...
they don't need to be used in that way.
Not after 8 years of George Bush, they don't.
I suggest that we not wrap ourselves up in the flag or the uniform
when have a discussion about this.

42. The "we need to leave now" crowd is making a lot of noise.

If we packed up and left, what would happen?

I'm pretty sure that the Taliban would regain control of Afghanistan.

First implication: we don't get a pipeline there. OK, that's no big deal (to me).

Secondary question that must be answered: What happens in Pakistan and in India?

Does Pakistan become more radical? (Probably) Will India see an increase in terrorist attacks like the one in Mumbai? (Probably).

What will the power structures in both countries do in response? ( Don't know, pretty sure I don't want to know)

Last question: If you believe in Global Climate change and the race to lock up resources (such as water), where is the first conflicts over this likely to happen? Where are there large populations of people that are already stressing their environments to the point that even a little change could cause major conflicts. What 3 nuclear armed countries are in the same region?

Now, do we really want the Taliban in control of Afghanistan (forget Bin Laden and Al Qaida)?

I don't like the answers any more than anyone else. I don't want to send more troops and contractors and money there, but give me alternatives.

79. Can't.
Brother died in the Navy when I was slated to go to the Naval Academy. Mom wouldn't let me go after that. Now, I'm waaay too old and I have a bad heart.

Now, what is your alternative to Obama's plan that DOES secure the Pakistani nuclear warheads (unlike the lies told by Bushco about Iraq and WMDs, I should hope that everyone here understands that Pakistan HAS nukes (estimated 40 to 90 warheads).

What if a Taliban like (or Taliban friendly government) takes over in Pakistan. What if the ISI delivers one to a Bin Laden follower and they put it on a container ship, some old rust bucket, and park it 3 miles or so off the coast of, well, ANYWHERE (not just the US). Then what? Nuke Pakistan? Just take it and write off some city somewhere and do nothing? What?

I don't like those options.

Present serious options rather than hyperbole.

Bush/Cheney never had an exit strategy, They even let Bin Laden go in Dec 01.

Sounds like Obama has an exit strategy, I need to hear his speech.

37. OK. The subject line came out of my heart. I just fucking HATE war of aggression.
Can you achieve peace through war? And should we look forward to drawing down in 2011-12? After an escalation? I am just so crushed at the moment.

55. Al Qaeda and their ilk don't impress me as exactly peace loving or rational
I know enough fundamentalist religious people to know about folks who think they are on a mission from God. They aren't rational.

And if you think God is telling you to kill people, we are talking about a whole other level of crazy.

If Bush had not let bin Laden go in 12/01 at Torah Bora we would not be in this mess.

If he had not gone into Iraq, same thing.

TRUST ME I HEAR YOU

I really don't like the idea of more troops and more years of war. I need to hear what Obama says

67. Not at all...
I'm all about the peace... and the truth... that's why I'm waiting to form an opinion based on what the POTUS has to say tonight, instead of what the media is telling us to think.

40. On "upside down day" all the reasonable posts have negative recs, the blathering ones, positive.
At least that's my observation.

Posts asking for reason, but with neg recs.

No need to link to the "popular" rants, they're all over today.

66. Does anyone remember the fall of Saigon?
The "reeducation" camps... the communist control?

I was just a little girl, but I remember learning about how we were lied to, and all those images came rushing back.

Apparently we're doomed to repeat mistakes.

Thank God Obama is smarter than your average DUer.

69. The URL in my browser says democraticunderground.com
But the content reads exactly like FreeRepublic.com.

I guess I'll have to blame it on micro black holes from the LHC, because otherwise it makes no sense.

77. It just occured to me, tridem...
...that I've been living with the unrealistic expectation that most everyone who came here was vastly more reasonable than average, than teabaggers, etc.

I've come to realize that, while we may on average be more mature and intellegent, there is still a Bell Curve; some at each end of the curve and most toward the middle.

That F.R.'s curve may skew way to the left of ours, we still have our left end of our bell.

And sometimes that demographic is "noisier" than usual.

Looking forward to hearing what our president has to say tonight.

:toast:

Before Obama was elected.

There is only ONE variable.
