Cheney, Rove take lead in prebutting Obama Afghanistan speech




As President Obama prepared to address the nation about his Afghanistan policy, former vice president Richard Cheney and former White House strategist Karl Rove led the Republican charge to shape perceptions of it in separate

media appearances that were published and aired Tuesday morning.

Speaking to Mike Allen and Jim Vandehei of Politico, Cheney repeated his oft-stated concern about Obama projecting "weakness" and warned of dire consequences of withdrawing prematurely from Afghanistan.

The average Afghan citizen "sees talk about exit strategies and how soon we can get out, instead of talk about how we win," Cheney told Politico.

"Those folks ... begin to look for ways to accommodate their enemies," Cheney said. "They're worried the United States isn't going to be there much longer and the bad guys are."

Cheney also slammed the president for being too conciliatory towards the world and for disagreeing with the Bush administration policies he promised to overturn once in office.
