Majority Leader Harry Reid accused John McCain today of a "huge, big belly-flop flip-flop" on healthcare.
McCain offered an amendment that would send the bill back to committee to restore hundreds of billions of dollars in Medicare Advantage funds that the legislation would cut to help pay for expanded coverage.
Democrats have pounced on McCain, pointing out that he suggested cutting Medicare Advantage to pay for health reform during the 2008 campaign. Here's how Reid responded to a question about McCain's proposal:
In addition to that, the sponsor of the amendment, during his presidential campaign, talked about cutting these monies. And, in addition to that, he voted for, when the Republicans were in power, an amendment that took exactly that amount of money out of Medicare. So I think he better get his reasoning straightened out, because this is a huge, big belly-flop flipflop, OK?Republicans responded by pointing out that Reid himself criticized Medicare cuts earlier this year. The Majority Leader called the Republican alternative budget "immoral" for cutting $27 billion in Medicare and Medicaid.
