I don't recall Bush talking to us like 5th graders. I remember him talking to us like we we're too stupid to know he was lying.

Vietghanistan indeed.

They have never had a central government. It is a tribal/regional country. He is fooling himself if he thinks he is going to pull them all together.

So off 30,000 more young men and women go to protect the Karzi family's heroin trade.

26. Not me.
First of all, the setting - the thundering music, the prop cadets, the flags everywhere - it was Bushian stagecraft that immediately set my teeth on edge.

The time he spent trying to emphasize that the Karzai government was legitimate was a total fraud. And the buzzwords of the Bush administration were all intact, down to "homeland". He just added a new twist by talking about the morality of America, even as we invade and occupy left and right.

36. what I heard underlying the whole speech was
"it is impossible (or you have to make many distasteful concessions) to implement a truly progressive agenda in our own country."

unlike *freak, Obama knows all the nuances of all the things he's saying. He's far too intelligent to not be "progressive." He understands that this area is the flash point, and he knows this area and it's history and alliances unlike the neo-cons, who were mentally ill and deluded or just lying for oil cos. So he knows the probable outcome...this is politics, if this was a real gung-ho escalation we'd have to have a draft.

The undertone was like, he has no choice, this is american politics, and the pentagon completely dominates foreign policy.

"Get the job done," - before the next presidential election cycle. Then we withdraw. Will aq be broken? I strongly doubt it. I think he does too.

38. I support his decision and the process he followed to reach it.
I've had a family member in Afghanistan twice who is likely to return. I support the addition of 30,000 troops. I did before the speech. I hope the speech convinces some others though I'm afraid it won't.

42. Unfortunately this is one of those times where he's doing what he has to do...
even though many people don't like it, but that is the right thing and they'll find out later.

Just like my Dad on healthcare. He doesn't have health insurance and doesn't support the health care reform cause he's a big time Repube...I just said to him, "That's ok if you don't understand it and don't support it. I'm still going to keep fighting to get you health care reform because it could save your life one of these days."
