3. Hey You... Have You Seen This ??? - Academy Award For Best Documentary In 1974

<snip>

Hearts and Minds is a documentary about the Vietnam War directed by Peter Davis. The film's title is based on a quote from President Lyndon B. Johnson: "the ultimate victory will depend on the hearts and minds of the people who actually live out there".<1> The movie was chosen as Best Feature Documentary at the 47th Academy Awards presented in 1975.<2>

The film premiered at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival. Commercial distribution was delayed in the United States due to legal issues, including a temporary restraining order obtained by one of the interviewees, former National Security Advisor Walt Rostow who had claimed through his attorney that the film was "somewhat misleading" and "not representative" and that he had not been given the opportunity to approve the results of his interview.<3> After Columbia Pictures refused to distribute the picture, Bert Schneider and Henry Jaglom purchased back the rights and released the film in March 1975 through Warner Bros. A planned December 18, 1974 opening in Los Angeles, California was canceled after the production company had been unable to pay the $1 million needed to buy the rights from Columbia Pictures. The film was ultimately played in Los Angeles for the one week it needed to be eligible for consideration in the 1974 Academy Awards.<4>

I started watching it but need to give it my undivided since it's lengthy. So I'm saving the link to get to it tomorrow when we're supposed to have snow.

7. I watched it twice and led a discussion on it.
It is so hard to watch. After seeing it, my day was not the same. In fact none of the days where, really.

6. It's been a long time since I've seen that
Thanks for posting it. It's an emotional viewing but it's time well spent.

There are many parallels between what's taking place in Afghanistan and what took place in Vietnam. If nothing else the human impact of war, the destruction of infrastructures, families, physical and mental well being and the lasting social impact warrant discussion.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

8. The human impact is what it has always been about to me.
Seeing on both sides, the pain and scars that were carried for the rest of their lives is heavy. So many lives lost, and they were the ones who got off easy.

10. The thing is, the vast majority of people would agree with that
However, they're minds are clouded by their fear of terrorist (just as it was by their fear of communism during the Vietnam war) to such an extent that it confuses them. Then there are those who fear the destruction we're going to leave behind, and their fears aren't unjustified. Quite the opposite actually, they're spot on. We're going to leave behind massive physical, emotional and social destruction. That's what war does. 'Afghanization' of this war isn't going to keep that from happening though. Nothing will. It's already been done.

Keeping in theme with my previous post:

"Only the dead have seen the end of war."
