Michael Moore: "This Is Absolutely INSANE"

Emotional Michael Moore calls Afghanistan troop build-up ‘insane’

By David Edwards and Muriel Kane

Following President Obama's announcement on Tuesday of a short-term troop surge in Afghanistan, an emotional Michael Moore told CNN's Larry King, "I feel very bad for him."

"I feel even worse for our troops," Moore went on, blinking back tears. "And I feel a real sadness for the parents of those soldiers.of ours over the next eighteen months who will not come back home."

"Our own CIA says there's less than a hundred al Qaeda in Afghanistan," Moore explained. "What are we doing in Afghanistan? This is absolutely insane. ... We have been in this war for twice as long now as the US was in World War II. ... We're going to have 100,000 troops there to find these killers -- who aren't even there!"

...............

"I hate to be even saying these things," Moore told King in conclusion, "because I honestly think Barack Obama is a good and decent man. He has a good heart. I believe he's a man of peace. ... I don't think there's any evil or dark place in his heart that's where this is coming from. I just think that he's listened to the generals. He's taken bad advice."

18. Yeah, shut up Michael - WAR is FUN. Get with the program.
Anyone who complains is a whiner and a child.

Maybe we can drop some nice white phosphorus on a few towns, or rape people's children in front of them at a secret prison site. It'll be great.

40. If Bush had made the speech
All you current war supporters would be screaming at the top of your lungs.

You can be a mindless drone for either political side, and it has been demonstrated on this forum lately.

This party is melting into the Republican party and watching these guys put on a show in congress moves me closer to George Carlin and the belief that the game is over.

But it's over because not enough people care. They've turned this into a "team" sport now and as long as YOUR team scores points, the consequences don't matter.

Funny how the Obama apologists only had ad hominems to offer as a retort to Mr. Moore's words. I assume you can run on empty marketing slogans for so long...

Throwing Michael F*cking Moore under the bus. I don't think this was the "change" I was expecting to see by now a year ago. F*ck I am starting to think I have seen this movie already. I wonder how soon until we're being told that dissenting with the president is unpatriotic. Then this will be clearly a re-run...

89. The British failed in Afghanistan, they lost an empire
The Soviet Union failed in Afghanistan. Its successor country, Russia is now a second rate nation.
And now we are trying where others failed. Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it. Our turn as a second tier nation is fast approaching.

like it is the taliban would take over with in a year. and once that happens al-qadae or whatever their name is will be back in full force up to their old tricks. I hear you on the war stuff doesn't work, but I really think there is no reasoning with these people, and that this will be an on going problem until the end of time.

115. What do you expect when we prop up an illegitimate puppet regime like they have now?
The people there are pretty much in opposition to their government as it stands and most feel like it is a puppet regime installed by the United States. Can you blame them for being receptive to the Taliban, even though they have a laundry list of bad qualities themselves?

The best option would be to negotiate with all sides and make bargains where necessary to install a power sharing agreement between all parties involved. Not the masterminds circa 2001 Taliban, take them into custody.

114. "Some people say Al-Qaeda isn't there" - including our very own CIA
So why are we fighting them there with what will be upwards of 100,000 troops? Why not use Special Forces and other assets to go after them where they really are currently?

This is ridiculous on its face. Al-Q is in Europe, Africa, Asia, and in other parts of the Middle East. Are we going to invade every country where they are at - or only the ones that have some kind of resource interest that our top 1% can exploit?

117. i think it's the taliban were currently fighting in afghan, with the
intentions of disrupting any plans that al-qaeda might have of re-estisblishing a central place for them to do business. I would also think we would fight al-qaeda any where they went and planned attacks against the U.S.

I think you would agree with that.

119. Because the poor are expendable.
They are an economic drain on the Empire, useless eaters, not able to contribute economically to the coffers of the greedy bastards who run the show, both in Congress and Wall Street. They have no money, so they have no representation. They can't make a decent living as civilians, especially in this economy, so they're forced to join in order to eat. Pretty slick, huh?

And before I get flamed, I don't agree with sending the poor, nor do I believe they're "useless eaters", but that's the way they're viewed by the MIC. In other words, they're cannon fodder as far as the PTB are concerned.

Say if there is less than a hundred al Qaeda in Afghanistan, then cleaning up and stabilizing the area should be a lot quicker, thus less killed.

And then they can get the hell out of there.

But he seems to be taking the CIA's word pretty easily.

12. Tell him to make a movie or actually go out and revolt instead of telling people to do it for him
When his capitalism movie came out a couple months ago, he was saying how he'd be fed to the lions (he hasn't) and that he'd quit making movies if people didn't start a revolution.

People know he's no deity and aren't going to rot or die for HIM.

People see him as a socialist anyway, so I find his turn on events amusing...

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mikes-letter/get-obamas-back-second-thoughts-michael-moore

Like limbaugh, he makes way too much money just to rile up the media (and to tell others to go out and revolt for him).

If everyone on DU did the same thing for a living as those two mouthpieces, America really WOULD be worse off.

Maybe he's feeding with the lions...

45. And it's most certainly not the fault of the Democrats..
For supporting policies which put one out of six of their by far strongest voting base in prison.

Without the more than decimation of the black male population by the drug war Gore would have handily won Florida in 2000.

One in three black males goes to prison in his life, thanks largely to the drug war, overwhelmingly supported by the Democrats.

In Florida, felons lose their right to vote.

I'm sure you can connect the dots.

If the people on this board haven't figured out that if everyone that was once your hero or you admired (and I realize I don't agree with EVERYTHING these people have said or done) are now saying things you don't like because of your deep love of ONE man and not the ideas and harm that his ideas are leading to well it's goodbye all critical thought. It's only love. There is no reason left. "I support my president." Yeah when he actually does what I support and have always supported and only then. That would be an end to war as soon as possible and real health care reform for starters. Otherwise it's time to protest and speak up.

I'm glad there are so few Al Qaeda in Afganistan right now. The question is where are they now and what do we do about them? Are we suppose to go from country to country invading every country they move to? If they're not in Afganistan now where are they? Probably in Pakistan. Does that mean we will be invading Pakistan next? I know we have to have some kind of counter terrorism program to track and find Al Qeada but does that mean we have to have a military offensive in every country we find them in? Michael Moore is right. This is insane. This is crazy. How are we suppose to win the war against Al Qeada this way?

138. as has been said many times before. there's a lot of people who think we spent the last 8 yrs
breaking the joint and have the obligation to attempt to fix it.

to call those people warmongers and demand they enlist is childish at best. you may not agree with it, but to call that warmongering or cheerleading for death is intellectually dishonest.

completely seperate from the issue of the buildup, the area is controlled by extremists who'd like to bring pakistan and afghanistan under sharia law.

ya know, the guys blowing up schools, chopping people's heads off, throwing acid in women's faces ect.

whether or not we should have anything to do with it is a seperate issue.
