6. I don't like it but I don;t think we can just drop all and leave.
I'm willing to give Obama a chance to give his Generals the opportunity to prove they're strategy is right. Just ONE CHANCE though. I would think that applies to Obama as well. He has one shot at this.

The idontlikeitbuts in Congress and in America are the reason we've been in these quagmires for almost a decade.

14. Maybe, but I admit I know nothing about military strategy or what it requires to run a country the
size of the US. I honestly believe Obama doesn't want to be at war and he's giving his Generals 1 1/2 yrs to prove they were right. If they weren't we're out of there!

16. All I know is what I heard from countless troops involved in it
They said it was a shit mission in 2005-2006 and the few I've talked to recently say it's a shit mission now.

12. It was political suicide for Obama to make this decision...
I can't see a smart guy like that making a decision that ends what could be a long and effective political career... he must be very sure this will work, or very sure the effort is worth it. I'm giving him ONE chance too.

18. It would be political suicide to ditch, too
Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. At least this way there's a chance of dealing with the fact Bush let the Taliban take over again.

19. Well then by all means let's take the road that costs more American troops their lives.
Are you fucking kidding me? If it's damned if you do and damned if you don't then pull the fuck out. Our troops are being used as an election tool AGAIN, by our own frakkin side. This "withdrawal" in 2011 will never take place. Have we learned nothing yet?

25. We can't pull out.
I know that you're probably one of those people who by now earnestly believe Obama started the war in Afghanistan, but it's been going on for eight years now. And it's been horribly mismanaged. As a result, Afghanistan is a shitheap. Know who's responsible? The United States of America is.

As the responsible party, we have an obligation to fix what we fucked up. And right now, that does mean the use of the military to push back the Taliban, warlords, and thugs that Bush allowed to take over again.

27. Well, your first sentence in that reply should pretty much invalidate your opinion on anything.
For its sheer stupidity. I didn't need to read any further, but like a train wreck I looked anyway and all I saw is more rationalization for needless death, and the blood is on our hands.

28. Sorry, I'm on a hair trigger these days
The last time I saw this much insane ignorance on DU was last November when there was a three-week swarm of "GET THE NI**ERS!" threads after the passage of prop 8.

Sorry, I Cheneyed you there.

29. All good. Having a fairly, stupendously bad week myself.
And all I see is tears at this end of this road. I still have other people's nightmares from hearing what these wars are doing to our people and the innocent people suffering for the folly of men in cloistered halls.

30. There's really no "perfect answer" to this mess
People are going to die no matter which way we go. The difference then, is which bad scenario has the best possible outcome. I honestly can't bring myself to believe that leaving the Afghans to rot in a failed state we created around them is a good decision. It's unconscionable.

No matter what he does, the goalpost will surely move.

This is what makes me think, more than anything else, that he truly believes that this is the best way to go... there's nothing in it for him personally at all.
