Short of simply agreeing with those who are advocating this escalation in Afghanistan in order to, excuse the phrase, keep the peace this is about as innocuous an action as could possibly be.

In an era of DU in which a post about any even remotely controversial subject quickly devolves into the verbal equivalent of global thermonuclear war I don't really see a silent voicing of an opinion through a change in avatar as being all that divisive.

Last Saturday or thereabouts I saw a post gleefully looking forward to last night's speech because the poster foresaw a lot of DU'ers he didn't care for getting themselves tombstoned over it. He was positively gloating about it. THAT's divisive. This... this is nuthin'.

I have no intention of flaming you or taunting you. On the contrary, I think you are doing a good thing. I want to keep my avatar of Tom Fox, though. He is a peace symbol. He was taken captive in Iraq on a peacekeeping mission to make public what the civilians were enduring there and to try to help them. His captors held him while Bush did nothing to free him. The others from his mission who had been taken hostage with him were from other countries and they were released alive after much secret negotiation. But Fox was a Quaker, and Bush hates Quakers. Fox was beheaded and killed.

Before he went to Iraq he asked that no one should use violence to free him. During his captivity his daughter went on TV and made the same request. This was the depth of their commitment to non-violence and peace. Fox knew what could happen to him when he went to Iraq, but he went willingly, gave as much help to those who needed it as he could, and died for what he believed in. This, I guess, is the ultimate in civil disobedience. That is why I say he is my peace symbol.

I am also a Quaker and very much against the war in Afghanistan, and I admire others who oppose war especially against great pressure very much. That includes you Javaman.

There are instructions there. These are the specs for the images you can use:

"You may have no more than one image (.jpg or .gif format) in your signature line at any time. This image may not exceed 500 pixels wide, 200 pixels tall, or a file size of 20 kilobytes."

So, if you have a photobucket account, for example, you would go there, edit the image you want to fit those specs, and then copy the image location, and paste it into the field at My Profile.

The location of the pix in my sig line is

I copied that at photobucket and pasted it into the signature filed at "My Profile" after I trimmed it down to be small enough.
