18. Huh
I thought that is the plan?

What's not funny is that right here, in the US, we've a similar crew.

They are going to bunker down for 18 months and come out as soon as we leave nastier than ever. IF we leave in 18 months.

You either fight this war with the full force of American power or you don't.

4. More like turn all of Afghanistan and Pakistan into their allies
against an occupying force.

Wouldn't a better strategy be to rebuild their infrastructure and economy and provide opportunity for girls and women and the country's future?

6. No
First you kill the Taliban and than you rebuild.

People think I'm a pacifist, I'm not, I view war as a policy that should be engaged in rarely, however when it is waged, you wage it. Your entire nation is totally devoted to destroying the enemy until it has either surrendered or has been exterminated.

I'm not for the half ass wars we have waged since after Korea.

We aren't fighting the NATION of Afghanistan. At least not yet.

14. No we shouldn't get involved in civil wars
Edited on Wed Dec-02-09 08:31 PM by AllentownJake
except in cases where you are building a wall of forces to prevent one party from committing genocide against the other party.

Due to the unique aspect religion plays in this war, it is even more foolish. People thinking they are going to heaven for killing people are extremely fierce fighters...there really is the only one option for them if you are going to fight them.

Getting involved militarily in another country's civil war is always foolish. The only time there was modest success is when North Korea was pushed back across the 38 parallel and even than, they were one ethnicity two already active governments.

16. Dude - I usually agree with everything you write (of course it's usually
Edited on Wed Dec-02-09 08:31 PM by Thickasabrick
about the economy). We cannot rebuild that country. Look at how fucked up the reconstruction effort turned out in Iraq - they've got a children's hospital (Laura Bush's idea), that is nearly finished but no one knows how to work any of the stuff in it so it will never open and fall into decay. That was 25 million wasted right there - although I'm sure the American Contractor is laughing all the way to the bank.

The only nation we should be rebuilding is the US.

20. I agree
and the only way I'd accept this war was absolutely necessary is if I saw the elites of American society signing up for combat like in World War II.

If you go to war, you go to war, it means everyone in society goes, and everyone is somehow involved in the war effort. If not you really don't have that big of a threat to go to war for.

8. It's hard to build a better life for girls and women when...
...the Taliban keep blowing up schools. Security needs to be the first issue that is dealt with in the nation.

10. That's true. But there are other ways to deal with security than occupying a nation.
Any read on Afghanistan will make clear how much they resent occupation. I am willing to bet anyone here that the occupation will swell the ranks of the Taliban. The occupation will create a long, drawn out war the will require more and more troops because we create more and more enemies.

"opportunity for girls and women" is crossing the line into religious territory.

21. I don't believe it and I think Ol' man McCain is wrong....again. You
seem to be a McCain supporter so you will remember his claim of knowing where Bin Laden is. Well, when is he going to divulge that? McCain is a sorry excuse for a Senator and a human being, imo.

19. It's not our fight they're not some foreign invader of Afghanistan.
There are religions and ideologies all over the world that I as an Atheist find repugnant. That doesn't give me the right to bomb them out of existence. The US shouldn't try to force it's customs on those who don't share them we should lead by example.

Pashtun Sunni. Other ethnicities not welcome. The only way this group can grow is through child birth.

Nothing like a group of violent, woman-hating, well-armed, in-bred, Sunni hillbillies to unite Democrats!

29. You are absolutely right....
Now.... do think it's possible to convert them? Do you think it's possible to kill them all?

Whatever methods you use, could we possibly use it on some segment of the US population. You know, the violent, woman-hating, well-armed, inbred, Fundamentalist hillbillies?

What would it take to conquer/convert our own Taliban?

I don't think it could work.. just like I don't think anything would work in Vietghanistan.
