WE ARE BANKRUPT ENOUGH ALREADY
When are we going to pull our stupid heads out of the sand and realize that mindless spending on the military is leading us nowhere but into a downward spiral to 3rh world status? Just get out of iraq and afghanistan and instead of meddling in other peoples affairs, end our reliance on oil, teach our children how to think, read and write instead of preparing them for idiotic tests, GET RELIGION OUT OF OUR LIVES (not possible i know but worth a rant)and stop thinking we are superior to others. We aren't, either fiscally, morally or intellectually so lets go over this stupid arrogance towards others, learn a little humility, treat others with respect and dignity and things will resolve themselves in the long run

The irony is far to thick to cut with a knife.

2. Maybe the change/hope plan is to continue the work of bankrupting the Empire?
That will certain bring certain military excesses to an end...

4. bad people wanna hurt us! [insert high-school-level cliche here]
remember how everyone questioned giving money to banks that threw people out of their homes? well, they're still throwing people out of their homes and not lending to small businesses, but the stock market stabilized! so there!

and prosecuting those ordering torture is as illegal as the torture itself! which should itself never be investigated!

:sarcasm: (yes, it's absolutely needed with all the Baltarites here; by 2010 they'll be no doubt posting pictures of God coming down from His throne to give President Blair His own seat)

5. You are applying common sense.
I agree. I think about why we are here and worse off then ever before and it all boils down to the lack of applying common sense.

I even go as far as to look at why they call an auto accident and accident because in reality most all of the time it was someone not paying attention or simply tossing common sense out the window unless a tire blows then perhaps it was an accident.

How can anyone take pride in a job building weapons designed to take others lives. How can a politician be in DC surrounded by graves filled with the dead and not stop and look and think about what wars cause.

7. That sounds sensible, except for the how, and managing the consequences of a power vacuum.
Otherwise, sounds good, especially the kid stuff and the humility part. My problem is with just walking away from the middle east. That won't work out well. That mess will come back to bite us. How we leave is important. And the money...some entities are not paying their fair share. We have the money.

Peace. MM

9. exactly how do you think it would create a "power vacuum" different
from how Karzai is viewed now & the 'president' of Iraq? How will it "come back to bite us"? It sounds like a problem of 'male pride', interestingly not exclusive to males only. One of the most difficult lessons of war is when to walk away. Doesn't sound as cool as "shock & awe", but ignore me, I'm used to it.

12. Knowing when...that can be tough. We have no good choices.
Things are so tangled that it just may be how we do whatever it is that we do is the important thing. I won't even try to answer your questions, and you have no guaranteed solutions. I do believe, however, that Obama will be better at this than Bush. Karzai is a tool.

14. what would make something a guarenteed solution? I still say Berlin Food
Drop. Also, house our troops WITH the Afghani people & provide them with books/translations about Afghanistan; pipe the whole nation, water pipes & waste pipes-ignore any illegal crops or buy it & turn it into morphine & codeine. The poppies are very xeriscape, water pipes would give them the opportunity to grow something else. The heavy equipment that cuts off mountain tops for coal mining SHOULD have been used there already, it wasn't & that's how I knew Bush was all talk; it would be easy to widen those "impassable mountain paths", I look at our 19th Century railroads as proof, now we have even better technology.

17. Good ideas. A totally different approach/ideology could be helpful.
We must tell the Afghanis, perhaps they will cooperate. Well, I'm sure we already have. Sadly, unreason too often rules. Sometimes, however, we, the human race, do seem to be getting better. I am hopeful. Enlightenment remains viable. Enlightenment reason is the foundation of our country, and oddly enough because of it we do seem to persevere after a fashion. Imperfect as it is, of course, our constitution is our best hope. Look at our country, it's politics, it's divisions, this is as good as it gets. People are contentious and difficult. Amelioration is the best we can do.

Peace. MM

8. Of course, that's why the Pukes say we shouldn't do healthcare reform.
"We're bankrupt enough already."

And they would say that "mindless spending" on entitlements is leading us to 3rd world status.

So that argument might only get us so far.
