"ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL." Those are the words upon which our country was founded, in the Declaration of Independence. ALL. Not just some, not just the ones who go along to get along. ALL.

Fuck you New York. This country continues to backslide to a place I simply don't recognize anymore.

ALBANY — The New York State Senate decisively rejected a bill on Wednesday that would have allowed gay couples to wed, providing a major victory for those who oppose same-sex marriage and underscoring the deep and emotional divisions surrounding the issue.

The 38-to-24 vote startled proponents of the bill and signaled that political momentum, at least right now, had shifted against same-sex marriage, even in heavily Democratic New York. It followed more than a year of lobbying by gay rights organizations, who poured close to $1 million into New York legislative races to boost support for the measure.

Senator Tom Libous, the deputy Republican leader, said the public was gripped by economic anxiety and remained uneasy about changing the state’s definition of marriage.

“Certainly this is an emotional issue and an important issue for many New Yorkers,” said Mr. Libous, of Binghamton. “I just don’t think the majority care too much about it at this time because they’re out of work, they want to see the state reduce spending, and they are having a hard time making ends meet. And I don’t mean to sound callous, but that’s true.”

<snip>

People are out of work, so they don't want to support equal rights? You're a STUPID FUCKING IDIOT, Mr. Libous of Binghamton.

1. oddly enough
if two men (or two women) get married in lets say Massachusetts and then move to NYS, NYS recognizes it as a legal marriage.

4. WTF?
 is right.

But now that you bring it up, NO, they should not have voted on it today or any other day. Civil rights are not decided via referendum.

7. Not by a POPULAR vote. We'd still have lynchings in some parts of the country if that were the case.

9. So, it is ok for a legislative body to vote on your civil rights, but not the voters?

10. What does the Judicary base their decisions on?
The Constitution and laws. How were the Constitution and laws created? By magic?

12. Freddie like to argue for the sake of arguing.
The Constitution and the laws gain their legitimacy through precedent. I'd delve deeper into it, but you clearly have some other agenda, and I'm not biting.

13. Repost: I'm not advocating waiting...
so don't get me wrong, but gay marriage, removal of DADT, and legalized pot will happen.

Just wait around for the old farts - other than me, of course - to die off.

It's coming as sure as... well... death and taxes.

Let's all write down the dumbshit things people say now about topics like gay marriage so we can have a laugh in a few years. I can only hope that some of the Fundie Generation are around to see that the world didn't end because two guys got married and smoked a ceremonial doobie afterward.

17. Why are people surprised by this? Our President thinks that states should decide.
He was very clear during the campaign.
