It's worth mentioning that it is standard fare for the elementary classroom in Japan.

That would imply governmental direction. In my experience there is a strong antiwar sentiment among the teachers themselves that is a legacy of Japan's history of militarism. They embrace the "cure" for that which is seen to be enshrined in their 'peace constitution' and take seriously the role of early education in forming a bulwark against the values that glorify war.
So "required" really doesn't fit; it is more of the promotion of a shared value.

I can't watch Grave of the Fireflies again. I saw it once, and it was too heartbreaking to see again, even years later.
