Rick Warren wonders why there’s so much fuss over the rights of gays.
In recent days, Pastor Rick Warren has come under fire for refusing to condemn an Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda that would make some homosexual acts punishable by death. “It is not my personal calling as a pastor in America to comment or interfere in the political process of other nations,” said Warren. On his Twitter feed, Warren is now trying to change the subject, claiming that “no one” cared when 146,000 Christians died last year (so why should he now care about gay men and women in Africa?):

The Ugandan legislation — supported by a pastor whom Warren has welcomed into his church — would mandate that any person “convicted of gay sex is liable to life imprisonment.” If that person is HIV positive or has sex with a minor or a person with a disability, he or she would be guilty of “aggravated homosexuality” and face the death penalty. The bill also proposes up to three years of imprisonment for anyone who “fails to report within 24 hours the identities of everyone they know who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, or who supports human rights for people who are.” (HT: TP Reader Roger)

I guess that not only is the president exempt from all criticism, but now that protection extends to everyone he has ever been associated with.

7. I think they are doing it because you will not let it go. You really need to get out more.

If unrec causes you this much angst and you can't get though a day without bringing it up you must not have a fulfilling life.

Seriously.

This is a message board of no consequence. None. If something doesn't make the greatest page it isn't that critical. It is a huge echo chamber where people come to shoot the shit. The no one here will be nominated for a Nobel for what they post. It ain't that serious.

13. I seldom comment on unrec, but it's revealing how any LGBT thread,
no matter what the specifics and no matter how innocuous, gets a flurry of unrecs as soon as it's posted.

Kinda makes one wonder, doesn't it?

26. Actually, I think there are many at DU . . .
who are not only disinterested in the subject of homosexual rights --

but may even be "anti-civil rights for homosexuals" . . .

but according to the rules of DU they'd be unable to voice that, while an "UN"

rec gives them a way to do it --???

Keep at it -- this is all part of democracy and gaining freedom for all --

And it's unrealistic for anyone here to expect us to ignore the added damage of

yet another surge of troops in Afghanistan -- damage to ourselves, of course.

The overall world view is negative and we can't try to suggest that DU is a place to hide

where people should be able to hide from that reality or ignore it -- !!

Let me also suggest that a good way to deal with an "UN" is to "kick" the thread -- !!

A kick vs an "UN" rec . . .

:)

6. I wonder what part of his ass he pulled that 146,000 from?
And what were the criteria to be listed as 'dying for Christianity?'

12. I wondered the same thing with no link - and considering how often
these phony pharisees make shit up to bolster their cause, I'll keep thinking it's bullshit until proven otherwise

Considering how bent out of shape they get and how loudly they whine that they're being "persecuted" if the kid at the Gap register says Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas - I'm pretty sure someone would have heard something last year if anyone was getting burned at the stake or something

8. I'm Confused
I thought that Christians considered it an honor to die for their faith?

After all they are going to a much better place, and they are going as martyrs for their beliefs.

So, if Christians are executed for their faith, shoudn't Warren be praising them for their sacrifice, instead of mourning for them?

9. I've searched and searched and cannot find anything to substantiate that claim
Edited on Thu Dec-03-09 10:09 AM by donco6
The only thing I can find is Warren's twitter about it.

I did find this, maybe this is where he's getting it?

According to the World Evangelical Alliance, over 200 million Christians in at least 60 countries are denied fundamental human rights solely because of their faith. David B. Barrett, Todd M. Johnson, and Peter F. Crossing in their 2009 report in the International Bulletin of Missionary Research (Vol. 33, No. 1: 32) estimate that approximately 176,000 Christians will have been martyred from mid-2008 to mid-2009. This, according to the authors, compares to 160,000 martyrs in mid-2000 and 34,400 at the beginning of the 20th century. If current trends continue, Barrett, Johnson and Crossing estimate that by 2025, an average of 210,000 Christians will be martyred annually.

It is worth noting, however, that many have asked whether the figures cited by the annual Barrett/Johnson/Crossing reports are reliable. Indeed, many persecution experts have concluded that they are untenable. Queries to the researchers have shown that these figures are, in fact, projected averages or statistical guesses rather than based on hard figures or actual documentation. Hence, it should be understood that The Voice of the Martyrs does not stand behind this report's findings as being indisputable facts.

They are people. Not animals, people. Tax paying people, family people, consuming people, religious people, human people.

16. Obama didn't 'skyrocket' him...

The Purpose Driven Life (2002) is a devotional book written by Christian author Rick Warren and published by Zondervan. The book has been on the New York Times Best Seller list for advice books for one of the longest periods in history, while also becoming arguably one of the best-selling non-fiction books of all time, topping the Wall Street Journal best seller charts as well as Publishers Weekly charts with over 30 million copies in print by 2006

Nothing shows your love for the LGBT citizens like spotting those two in your campaign and inauguration.
