A question about Comcast & NBC. .
Comcast is a cable outfit, not under the control of the FCC, right? Will NBC still be subject to FCC rules if the merge goes through? What about the fact that they technically are only leasing the airwaves?

Would a merger rearrange any of that accountability (honored only in the breach though it is).

1. The FCC will be examining this merger supposedly...
Jen Howard, spokeswoman for FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, said only that "the FCC will carefully examine the proposed merger and will be thorough, fair, and fact-based in its review.”

3. I resist any more merger-mania in the media...
I just think it's a bad idea all around.

2. I heard on local radio that the FCC will be
in the nooks and crannies of this deal before it is approved.

A deep dive, for sure.

4. The FCC does have to approve the merger, from what I understand.
Let's hope they're more selective this time than they have been in the past. When it comes to corporations, I really prefer smaller, more diverse organizations as opposed to mega corporations that have too much control and become too big to fail.

I hope this isn't approved.

5. Look at it this way...
If I owned an auto repair shop and I made so much money I decided to buy a radio station, since my auto repair shop is not under the FCC would my radio station be under the FCC?

It doesn't matter WHO owns NBC. NBC is still a broadcast network and is under the FCC.

6. So long as they broadcast the FCC regulates.
GE owns NBC now. GE is not subject to FCC. But NBC is. Nothing about this will change that.

7. Cable is not free of FCC jurisdiction ...

Any element of the business that comes under FCC jurisdiction is subject to it regardless of any other elements of the business.
