Assessing the Afghan Surge
Response to Obama's plan has been varied across the political spectrum, as supporters and opponents parse the president's words for details. Here, five experts--Richard N. Haass, Kim Kagan, Lt. Gen. David W. Barno, Candace Rondeaux, and Daniel Markey--offer their assessment of the new strategy, and consider whether it will be sufficient to return stability to Afghanistan, protect the Afghan public, encourage democratic reforms, and begin clearing the way for an eventual departure.
