After protests in Los Angeles, Salvation Army to stop checking Social Security numbers for toy drive
On Tuesday, the Houston Chronicle reported that a few charities in Houston — including the Salvation Army — were checking the immigration status of needy families before giving out gifts in its annual toy drive. The organization then disputed the report, claiming that it requires at least one family member to present a Social Security number to deter fraud, not to “discriminate.” Yesterday, however, the charity reversed course. After a few dozen immigrants protested outside of a Los Angeles Salvation Army branch, the charity said that it was changing its policy and will no longer be checking Social Security numbers.

ICE agents disguised as SA workers. I don't doubt that is might have been a ploy to trap illegal immigrants.

Grifters for Jeebus.

1. This won't get the same number of responses...
...as the other thread. Most likely they'll still have to present some form of ID, but that was the case before anyway. Even the original article listed the acceptable forms of ID besides SSN.

2. Why would they need any ID at all to receive a toy for Christmas?
What sort of "fraud" could they possibly be worried about from a child receiving a toy. This is just more racist bullshit..

3. In cities with multiple gift distribution centers...
...without ID it would be possible for families to go from one location to another taking resources from other families in need. In that way, it really is a good way to make sure that the maximum number of families are helped if duplication is avoided.
