http://mediamattersaction.org/blog/200912030002Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the Radioactive Import Deterrence Act, which would "prohibit the importation of certain low-level radioactive waste into the United States."
As reported by the Associated Press, the bill "was prompted by a Salt Lake City company's plan to import 20,000 tons of low-level radioactive waste from Italian nuclear plants. The waste imported by EnergySolutions would have been processed in Tennessee and buried at a site in Utah."
Preventing the U.S. from becoming a dumping ground for nuclear waste may not seem like controversial stuff, but 111 Republicans voted against the measure, which passed by a vote of 309-112.
Minority Leader John Boehner and Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence joined with far-right Reps. Michele Bachmann, Steve King, and Virginia Foxx, among others, in opposing the bipartisan bill and saying "yes" to nuclear waste.
Notably, EnergySolutions is a "top contributor" to the National Republican Campaign Committee so far in the 2010 cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
