Once again, I must ask that posters include a brief summary when
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 03:33 PM by tblue37
posting videos, so that those of us who are deaf or hard of hearing (HoH), as well as DUers who have slow dial-ups or who visit DU in places where they cannot use the sound, can participate in the discussion. I am not asking for a huge, detailed summary or a complete transcript--just the key points that you are posting he video because you want us to know about them.

I cannot begin to explain to people with normal hearing how frustrating and discouraging it is to be constantly excluded from conversations because of our inability to hear. But here on DU it is especially frustrating, because when someone posts a video, it is because the poster thinks that video contains something very interesting or very important.

Whenever I post this request, many people start trying to include brief summaries, but before long, they forget again, and once more we deafies are left out in the cold.

Please, please, please include us deaf/HoH DUers in the discussion. (And don't forget the people with normal hearing who, for whatever reason, can't use the sound or who have slow dial-ups.)

Thank you.

If they can't be bothered to post anything other than the link I can't be bothered to watch. Same thing with a link to an article with no summary or no snip. If it's important or interesting enough to post than it's important or interesting enough to tell me what to expect at the link provided.

We appreciate your reminder.

I have a vision problem and sometimes I can't read the spelling suggestions and I mess up.

I certainly can begin to understand how you feel.

It hurts me when people become the "Spelling Police" around here.

I'm sure that it is to point out how smart they are but it still hurts.

Thanks again for helping us to grow.

Nobody is going to click on a link unless you give them a clue what it's all about, people.

It's not quite as bad as the "TURN ON CNN NOW!!" posts with no enlightenment as to why, but it's nearly as infuriating.

10. I actually post this request every couple of months, because
for a short while after I post it, a t people are wonderfully considerate about providing summaries. But then it sort of peters out. I don't blame them. People are buy and distracted, and it's hard when you are not hearing impaired to even think about it, not because you don't care, but because it's just not on your radar.

S then Icome along and ask again, just as a remide. People ehre are really nice, houh, and when they get reminded, they are usually very sweet about helping us out.

They are also very weet about kicking and recommending these posts so that they can be more visible. For that, I thank all of you.

My hearing is not what it use to be but is not too bad. I am on dialup and will not try to download any videos. If those who wish everyone to see their AWESOME video links they should contact Congress about forcing the telecoms and cable companies to offer high speed in the rural areas. If they can do it in the "old" Europe surely we can do it in America.

25. K&R. I agree, but good luck with it.
Some posters are so self-absorbed that they think everyone in the world knows what they're thinking, so they don't have to tell us. Same goes for those who post four paragraphs of a story that don't tell what the story is about, they can't be bothered to add a sentence or two of their own explanation of what the heck they're talking about, and they don't even indicate what is their own writing and what is quoted from somewhere else.

47. I have noticed that some posters don't differentiate between
Edited on Sat Dec-05-09 11:15 AM by tblue37
what they have written and what they are quoting, but I suspect that sometimes that is caused by an unfamiliarity with such tags as "blockquote."

I am always frustrated by those who post long, long comments--without breaking for paragraphs, or pehaps with paragaphs, but with no white space between them. What's worse is that sometimes those long posts are really good post that I really, really would like to read, but I am 59 years old, an my aging eyes can't untangle that large a block of uninterrupted text on the computer monitor.

In those cases, too, though, I suspect computer unfamiliarity (which persists for years in people who use the computer mainly as a typewriter) is the culprit. My 56-year-old sister writes me very long emails with no paragraph breaks at all. I think she just types away without thinking, "This is on the computer. I'd better leave white space." When writing by hand, including paragraph breaks would come naturally, since she has been doing so since third grade, but it's so easy on the computer to type away and then hit "send" that I think she just doesn't even think about it. Since she is my sister and not some anonymous poster, though. I copy her emails into a Word document and make paragraph breaks myself so that I can read them. But I won't take that kindof time over an anonymous post on a essage board.

48. If I am particularly frustrated by lack of summary on a video I really would like to know about,
I will leave a post telling the OP that I WOULD have rec'd the thread if there had been a summary, but since there wasn't, I won't. Sometimes that nudges theminto providing a summary.

If you are actually unrec'ing for lack of summary, perhaps it would also help if you let them know that, so that in the future they might remember to add a summary, since most people want their posts to be rec'd and sent to th greatest page where they have a better chance of being seen.

28. Thanks for pointing out some valid reasons.
I generally don't participate on threads dependent on watching video, but not because I can't watch.

I'm an impatient person. I don't watch much tv, either. I can read a transcript in a fraction of the time I have to sit and passively watch something. So I don't often stop to watch.

It's not reasonable, though, to ask people for written info instead of video just because I'm impatient, lol.

internet writer for the hearing impaired, so I also know what my readers like and what frutrates them all to hell when "hearies" ignore their difficulty with things dependent on hearing what is going on.

I alo participate in many foums where the daf/HoH discss such things. I am deciding what I, as a severely hearing impaired, person need, but I am not ""for the others--just reporting what they say about such things.

But, really, this is a weird post. I ask for a small but thoughtful accommodation for my inability to hear, and you act like I am trying to control other deaf/HoH people. Obviously you are jut being unpleasant for the sake of being unpleasant.

Besides, the overwhelmingly positive response to this thread indicates that many ohther people, HoH and not, agree with me.

NEVER MIND! I just realized that the poster I am responding to in this post was not saying that I have no right to say what HoH people need. He was responding to post #30, which said that the videos are not worth watching most of the time anyway.

I usually add a synopsis and if/when they're available I add the transcripts.

Someone recently posted a video about how to add subtitles and I tried it out. Here's my 1st attempt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDI4Y2GLIig

PS I also get really annoyed when someone goes to the trouble of uploading a video to YouTube and can't be bothered to add a synopsis or at least a related link.

Sometimes it's late at night and I don't want to put the sound on --

And right now, I'm unable to play some videos --

that's happened once or twice before --

Always good to have text giving us a clue as to what it's all about -- a time saver, as well -- !

:)

62. Hopefully, youtube will have captions, soon. Here's an
article that someone from ALDA sent me - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8369941.stm

67. One poster above has already started adding captions to his YouTube videos.
Edited on Sat Dec-05-09 01:48 PM by tblue37
I followed the link he provided, and the captions were perfect! (See post #34 above for his link.)

I hope everyone on YouTube will begin adding such captions now that they are available.

64. I thought it was required to
include a brief synopsis whenever posting a video or an article.

If not, it should be.

68. Yep--it *should* be.
Thre are several video posts on the greatest page right now without summaries. It's very frustrating.

66. Every time I post a request like this, it gets *a lot* of recs.
This suggsts to me that I am not the only person on DU who is bothered by videos that are posted without any summary of their contents.

I hope everyone keeps this fact in mind!

70. Any link as well. I really hate opening an interesting sounding OP
just to find a link to somewhere else, not even so much as a comment about the article. Even if I trust the "somewhere else," I always unrec and wait for a poster that knows how to post a forum OP properly.

76. A further word on dial up speed...
takes me about 5 minutes to download 1 minute of video. Needless to say, only in the most important situations do I take the time to bother.

The self-proclaimed political organizer, David Swanson, was quite nasty once when I called this linking-without-description of subject matter a problem for dial-up users.

If you all can do so, would really appreciate a small heads up on important videos.
