Michigan Bluff Weather Tree Toppled (700-900 year old tree)
Michigan Bluff Weather Tree Toppled

MICHIGAN BLUFF, CA - It survived wind, rain and storm for centuries. But recent winds that swept through the area were finally too much for the locally famous Michigan Bluff Weather Tree.

"When the wind hit a few days ago, that's all it took and the whole ground shook," said Bob Phillips, who used to see the tree every time he looked out his Placer County window for the past 50 years.

The weather predictions came from the number of acorns the oak tree would drop every year. If there were a lot of acorns, it meant snow was coming.

The tree was also believed to be ancient, dating back perhaps some 900 years.

"The fall of Constantinople, the Roman invasion of England; according to my information, that's when the tree is supposed to have poked its head above the ground," Phillips said.

Phillips said that assessment came from someone in UC Davis Agriculture Department some years ago, but there was also a magazine article in 1970 that claimed the tree wasn't a day over 780.

2. Somebody is math or history impaired.
If the tree is 900 years old (and it probably isn't) that would mean it sprouted in 1109, or about a thousand years after the Roman invasion of England.

4. Probably thinking of Richard I
who made it part of the Holy Roman Empire in the late 12th century.

5. He was probably thinking of the Norman Invasion of England (William the Conquerer), in 1066.

which would make his math off by not quite 50 years.

MSM of the day was the Bayeux Tapestry...

3. Not a patch
on the pine tree which some comedians used for target practice and which turned out to be the oldest tree on your continent.

6. I thought it was the weather tree because
if it was wet, it's raining. If it's white it's snowing...
