Counterpunch is a fucking embarassment. Not only to the left
but to any thinking person. It's marginally, and only marginally with worldnut daily- a rag with which it has a lot in common. It strives to rile not to inform. It plays on the biases of its readership. It's filled with misinformation and outright lies. It's downright ugly.

phew. glad I got that off my chest. I've been wanting to say that for quite sometime.

18. This is going to get real interesting
folks here lately really seem to be coming out of their shells lately now that they don't really have to pander for votes for Democratic Candidates. Should be really interesting how the knees jerk as we get closer to another elections and the issues that are expressed in those sources as important all of a sudden are expressed as important here.

Funny how the "fuck you" mentality often expressed by Republicans during Bush's reign has not merged over here.

I've never read counterpunch. I am a daily reader of the WSW (soon to be a writer there myself as they've asked me to write a few articles concerning the slashing of services for the mentall disabled and psych populations) and find their analysis to be excellent when looking at the issues facing the working classes.

To each his own. I'd rather folks find their own truths rather than try and stuff it down their throats. Problem arises when folks proclaim that "my truth is the only truth". Growth ceases and one becomes an idealogue and less a person. That's not healthy.

28. Probably in the next month or so
I'm still trying to get my job situation squared away. Was working a nurse assistant for a while and lost my job due to passing my boards. I'm now officially an RN (for the last three months) but due to the economy there are no new grad positions available.

Was going to write something about the Forbes article encouraging folks to go into nursing and the fact that they falsely refer to it as "recession proof". Reminds me of something out of the "Grapes of Wrath" toward the end of the book. There are no new grad positions available throughout most of the country. Was reading the allnurses boards and the complaint is the same everywhere.

The "growth" is all the retirees coming back for less money due the assault on the working class these last few years. New nurse grads cost money to train so the hospitals are skimping.

the more you wonder why it took so long for somebody to punch a hole in his thick skull.

I knew exactly what the Trotskyite new left was all about in the 60s and their conversion to the neocon, Straussian cause was inevitable.

(Love that sig symbol, by the way :hi:)

Many of its' intellectual leaders are/were Jewish, as well. (Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz and David Horowitz come to mind immediately) You'd be exceptionally hard-pressed to make an argument that Judaism is the intellectual-progenitor of neo-conservatism. In fact, (and to be perfectly-clear before anybody accuses me of antisemitism) I think that might be pretty-close to 180-degrees from reality.

(Also...possessive "it" is "its'", not "it's". "It's" is the contraction of "it is".)

89. Okay
I have read the history of the neo-conservatism before but had never come across any accusations of Trotksyism. So I Googled "Neoconservatism Trotsky" but didn't find any damning evidence. I did find this critique of the argument however from the libertarian journal, "Enter Stage Right".

http://www.enterstageright.com/archive/articles/0304/0304neocontrot.txt

It's an interesting and well sourced read. As Chan790 alludes the accusation boils down to guilt by association.

Trotskyites on the other hand are fucking brilliant...if Leon Trotsky (who had been Lenin's choice) has succeeded Lenin instead of Josef Stalin, the Cold War would have turned out very differently. I mean, wow, a logically-consistent unified theory of communism that would actually work...truly the work of a blithering moron. :eyes:

92. Actually, I don't think WSW is all that bad
Sometimes the writing becomes overly ideological, imo, but overall I like the class analysis it offers (and I'm not a troskyite or Trotskyite). And at least you know what you're going to get when you visit a site called the World Socialist Website. I don't think a lot people realize when they tune into network or cable news (unless it's FOX) that they're getting news shaped by corporate ideology.

I'm not a fan of Counterpunch, though.

44. Pride in ones vote is good -- I really should have written "Maybe not something to 'boast" about"
i wrote a long clarification of what I meant, but deleted it. Probably enough to say that I feel too much bitterness over the second term of GWB, It would have been good to overwhelm the "Bush Voting Machines" - every vote counted.

31. so either you wanted Bush to be president, or you were in a state
that was so lopsided one way or the other that you could safely assume the latter.

I have no problem if it was a safe vote that wouldn't impact whether Bush or Kerry took office. But that is a lot different than what Counterpuke did - essentially used their platform to advocate for Bush being re-elected.

67. I used to read them a lot
they had interesting articles and I exchanged some friendly emails with some of the writers there too. But no Democrat was ever good enough for them. Once the Democratic primaries began it turned into a "Punch the Democratic Party" site. Not that Democrats don't often deserve to be 'punched' or critiqued, but when no Democrat is ever good enough then it seems to be pointlessly defeatist. Like it doesn't matter who wins an election because Democrats suck just like Republicans, and it doesn't matter who wins the primary because a Progressive Democrat sucks just like a Blue Dog Democrat. It's like they cannot tell the difference between a dime and $10,000,000,000,000. Gore was not perfect, perhaps very far from it, but he was still far, far, far, far, far better than George W. Bush.

15. Where else can you read about Sidney Gottlieb, lawbreaking CIA scientist?
CIA's Sidney Gottlieb: Pusher, Assassin & Pimp

US Official Poisoner Dies

EXCERPT...

Incredibly, neither the Times nor the Post obituaries mention Gottlieb's crucial role in the death of Dr. Frank Olson, who worked for the US Army's biological weapons center at Fort Detrick. At a CIA sponsored retreat in rural Maryland on November 18, 1953, Gottlieb gave the unwitting Olson a glass of Cointreau liberally spiked with LSD. Olson developed psychotic symptoms soon thereafter and within a few days had plunged to his death from an upper floor room at the New York Statler-Hilton. Olson was sharing the room with Gottlieb's number two, a CIA man called Robert Lashbrook, who had taken the deranged man to see a CIA-sponsored medic called Harold Abramson who ran an allergy clinic at Mount Sinai, funded by Gottlieb to research LSD.

Don't remember seeing him mentioned like that in the New York Times.

Now I don't agree with a lot of other stuff I read on CounterPunch, but that's the idea.

32. I see a lot of variety at Counterpunch, and have often come across information and issues there
that I was unaware of. It's a very informative leftist web site.

Here's the current list of articles down the left side of the page. I am interested in most of these. I've already read Cockburn's ed, because I was wondering what set cali off. I think this was probably it (no, cali?).

War Cries From a Defeated Man, by ed Alexander Cockburn
(a bit over the top anti-Obama, but I can't say I disagree with most of it)

The Selling of "Precious": Hollywood's Enduring Myth of the Black Male Sexual Predator, by Ishmael Reed
(interested)

The Twin Frauds of Obama, by Paul Craig Roberts
(haven't read it yet)

Children Afraid of the Night: the Regional Alternative to Escalation in Afghanistan, by Vijay Prashad
(very interested)

Pakistan Creates Its Own Enemy, by Muhammad Idrees Ahmad
(interested)

Juvenile Injustice in a Philly Suburb, by Linn Washington, Jr.
(interested)

The Rape of Irish Children, by Eamonn McCann
(interested)

Lebanon: an End to Sectarian Politics, by Rannie Amiri
(interested)

Top Sports Sex Scandals, by David Rosen
(not interested - but might read it because it's CounterPunch--expect an original angle)

Turning Activists Into Voters in Uruguay, by Benjamin Dangl
(very interested - Dangl was one of the organizers of Seattle '99)

And the list goes on like this. In the past, I've found usually well-researched viewpoints, often good analysis, or at least an alternative to the uniform crapoloa of the corpo-fascist 'news' monopolies.

Why rant against CounterPunch, and not against, oh, the Washington Psst or the Miami Hairball or the New York Slimes or the Wall Street Urinal, who are actually doing A LOT of harm in the world?

We gotta leave room for criticism--even blistering criticism--of our leaders. They are sometimes wrong. No, more than that--they are OFTEN wrong. They are running an Empire with a huge and extremely deadly war machine deployed all over the world. Why shouldn't they be criticized? Are we slaves? Are our thoughts controlled by "Big Brother"? Are we merely their cannon fodder, slave laborers and get-out-the-vote drivers and phone bankers? Are we free people or not?

I don't like corpo-fascist billionaires monopolizing the broadcast and print media, with non-stop corporate and war propaganda. They will build up an Obama and then tear him down, as it suits them and their 'TRADE SECRET' voting machines. I don't mean that kind of criticism. I mean real criticism--criticism of the fundamental premises of our government and society, as those premises are carried out by the people who can afford to run for office. Counterpunch offers that kind of criticism--real criticism. Even if you don't agree with it--and even if it isn't big on offering solutions (which is my major criticism of it)--it is worth reading, especially, as has happened to the left since Vietnam, our own party utterly betrays our peoples' desire for peace and justice.

59. Judith Miller *UGH*
It has never been determined/admitted/convicted (as of yet.....) what her ties truly were to David Kelly's life/death and/or Scooter Libby, Chief of Staff for 'Darth' Cheney. The Valerie Plame Affair.....Sibel Edmonds.....

The ties ARE THICK. There is a LOT of "there" THERE @ Judith Miller.

Here's just a bit from wikipedia, but there's MORE, much much more THERE (read back on the story/his-story) ~ check the archives of DU, for starters:

<snip>
Failure to report source controversy
In July 2005, Miller was jailed for contempt of court for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating a leak naming Valerie Plame as a covert CIA agent. Miller did not write about Plame, but was reportedly in possession of evidence relevant to the leak investigation. According to a subpoena, Miller met with an unnamed government official — later revealed to be I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff—on July 8, 2003, two days after former ambassador Joseph Wilson published an Op-Ed in the Times criticizing the Bush administration for "twisting" intelligence to justify war in Iraq. (Plame's CIA identity was revealed in a column by conservative political commentator Robert Novak on July 14, 2003.)

On July 16, 2005, The Washington Post reported that Miller could face criminal contempt charges, which could have extended her jail time six months beyond the four months then anticipated.<14> The Post also suggested that special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was particularly interested in hearing Miller's version of her encounter with Libby. While Libby signed a waiver allowing journalists to testify about their conversations on this subject, Miller had reportedly refused to accept its validity on the grounds that it was "coerced".

Filings by Patrick Fitzgerald alleged that Miller's defiance of the court constituted a crime. On September 29, 2005, after spending 85 days in jail, Miller was released after a telephone call with Libby. He had reaffirmed a release of confidentiality that he had given her a year earlier and that she had already known about. Under oath, Miller was questioned by Patrick Fitzgerald before a federal grand jury the following day, September 30, 2005<15> but was not relieved of contempt charges until after testifying again on October 12, 2005. For her second grand jury appearance, Miller produced a notebook from a previously-undisclosed meeting with Libby on June 23, 2003, several weeks before Wilson's New York Times editorial was published. According to Miller's notes from that earlier meeting, Libby disclosed that Joseph Wilson's wife was a CIA employee involved in her husband's trip to Niger. Miller's notebook from her July 8, 2003 meeting with Libby contains the name "Valerie Flame ". <16> This reference occurred six days before Novak published Plame's name and unmasked her as a CIA operative.

The New York Times published Miller's first-person account, "My Four Hours Testifying in the Federal Grand Jury Room", on October 16, 2005. Miller incorrectly invoked First Amendment journalistic principles in going to jail, despite established legal precedent showing the constitution affords no protection for reporters testifying in front of Grand Juries (Branzburg v. Hayes). After the First Amendment claim, she was widely derided for saying that she could not remember who gave her the name "Valerie Plame" but that she was sure it didn't come from Libby.<17> (Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer testified, for example, that he was told Plame's name and CIA identity by Libby at lunch on July 7, 2003, one day before Libby's breakfast meeting with Miller.)<18> Miller's grand jury account was her last article in the New York Times, which negotiated a private severance package shortly afterwards. Miller testified as a witness on January 30, 2007 at the trial of "Scooter" Libby, which began in January 2007 and ended with Libby's conviction on four of five counts on March 6, 2007. <19>

36. I've never read Counterpunch
maybe I have at some point and don't recall. Wouldn't say I'm qualified to offer an opinion on the matter.

I do read a lot of leftist material (Howard Zinn being one of my favorites as well as Marx) as well as interact with a lot of em off this board. I don't recall many of em refrencing that site so I wouldn't call it a major staple of the Left anymore than Larouche representative of most Democrats.

I have read much of the OPs posts on this board enough to know that he/she is staunchly anti left. So it's not like he/she is really an authority on the matter either.

Why I can't stand Counterpunch

If there's something that's nearly a sure bet prediction, it's that Cockburn and Counterpunch will go after Obama relentlessly and viciously. After all, this is the rag that went relentlessly after Clinton and Gore and just about every other dem you've ever heard of- aside from Dennis Kucinich. Now, I am NOT NOT NOT saying that Obama shouldn't be vigorously criticized. You bet he should be. But he should also be commended when he does good things. And you can bet your ass you'll rarely if ever see the crowd at Counterpunch doing that.

Now a lot of folks around here think highly of Counterpunch. I think they lie and smear as much as any right wing source. And like the shitrag it is, the Counterpunchies are busy as bees drawing as many comparisons between Obama and bushco as they possibly can.

more, more, more.............yawn

Comparing Bush and Obama?!?! How could they!?!? I guess history has shown those crazy folks were way off base in making that comparison.

65. Only if you view all writing (there and elsewhere on the net) as some significant movement
It's perfectly valid to pan an article with specifics, but to brand all of the articles with one biased swipe seems awfully anti-intellectual. Embarrassment? I just don't think those folk's opinion pieces are embarrassing. I'm not embarrassed by them. Why do folks get so defensive about ideas expressed? Debate the points they make or ignore them. This type of criticism that you've made here (while perfectly fine to hold an opinion and express it) is too broad based and essentially a smear.

72. well even though my brother writes for Counterpunch
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 12:32 AM by Douglas Carpenter
- My brother is an international lawyer who writes articles for a number of leftie online publications including Counterpunch on issues of international law.

The point I am making is that Counterpunch carries a large composite of articles by a lot of different writers - some are good and well done - some are sure nonsense. I am not the least bit interested in the whole Tiger Woods matter - for the same reasons I don't care much about office gossip about who is doing who - but I would agree that the article claiming that the whole scandal about Tiger Woods' extramarital affairs are motivated by racism sounds to me like a bit of a stretch. I think Tiger Woods' infidelity is in the news because it makes for juicy gossip.

Still if the standard is what passes for mainstream journalism in the United States these days, I don't think Counterpunch is all that bad.

86. k&r though I seem to be a minority on the thread!
Though I would add that IMO Counterpunch should not be a 'fucking embarrassment to the left' because it is *not* consistently left. It has some good left-wing contributors and articles, and it also has some nasty right contributors such as Paul Craig Roberts.

It is consistently against the war, and good for it on that. And it has an interesting international group of contributors, who give interesting perspectives, whether one agrees with them or not, on other countries.

But it has some far from progressive attitudes: e.g. (1) Cockburn's global warming denial; (2) a tendency by some writers (notably Bill and Kathleen Christison and Gilad Atzmon) to blame Israelis and Jews for the actions of America and other countries; and (3, and perhaps less well-known than the two previous items) demonization of Bosnian Muslims by some writers including Cockburn himself.

I don't think it should be banned or suppressed in any way, but I think it needs to be read critically, and not just assumed to be progressive on everything.
