Columbus Woman Declares War On Evil, Immoral.......Libraries!!!
Woman Wants Book About Sex Banned From Library

PATASKALA, Ohio — A woman is campaigning to permanently take a book off library shelves, 10TV's Cara Connelly reported Thursday. Marti Shigley said she found the book on the shelf at her local library - according to her - available right at a child's eye level. "When I opened it, I could not believe how graphic it was, and I thought my word if one of those kids had picked this up and looked inside of it they would have been ruined for life," Shigley said.

The library's director, Matt Nojonen, said the book in question, a sexual health manual, is in the adult section and he stands behind the book. "There is a demand for them the other manuals and the books that we have on the subject are frequently borrowed," Nojonen said.

Shigley said she does not just want the book out of a child's reach, she wants it gone for good. Nojonen said he fears when you take every book off the shelf that someone objects to, you may have nothing left. "Our policies very clearly state that we will buy books that represent all sides of issues," Nojonen said.

Pataskala resident John Glaze said he wants the shelves at his library to stay full. "When you start yanking books off the shelf then we all need to start wearing swastikas," Glaze said. Leah Swan disagrees and said she brings her daughter, Caroline, to the library, and worries the book could fall into the wrong hands. "I think free speech can sometimes be abused in the name of getting weird and bizarre," Swan said.

The library's advisory board heard Shigley's complaint and decided to keep the book in the collection if they can get it back, Connelly reported. Shigley checked it out and said she does not plan to return it. "It may cost me a little bit of money but I don't want anyone else to see this book," Shigley said. The library said that if Shigley fails to return the book, they may revoke her library card.

8. That's exactly what they need to do
Going to the library is a privilege, not a right, and she has abused that privilege by trying to dictate to other adults what they are allowed to read.

She also needs to know that even if she manages to ban every book in the world, sex is still going to exist and people are still going to do it whether she likes it or not.

Of all the human types out there, the worst one is the saint who wants to dictate to sinners what they're not allowed to do any more.

9. one of my grandmothers once read a book from the library that offended her
she got though one chapter, decided she didn't like it and returned it. A few months later the librarian called and asked if she would comment on the book as another library patron had complained and wanted it removed. My grandmother said it simply was not for her so she stopped reading it. The librarian said the woman who complained has said "I read it three times and it was absolute filth!!!" :freak:

you all know that when peeple git nekkid they sometimes take baths and stuff.

I am so glad the stork found my house that day in 1951.

I bet she undresses in the dark and lays her clothes out before going to bed at night. Probably puts on the grannypanties before taking off the flannel nightgown and turnng on the light in the morning.

But seriously, nekkid people????? that's wierd.

How about an old fashioned book burning? If that ever happens, I will be the first in line to throw a copy of Sarah's bio onto the flames and everything and anything written by Hannity, O'Reilly and Beck. Banning books can cut two ways ya know!

15. If your child is so fragile that a glimpse of a book will mark them for life,
dirty books at the library are the lest of your problems, honey!

Of course, I had child's picture books of human anatomy lying around the house as well as Lennart Nilsson's A Child is Born when my kids were little.

I don't know if we ever had "THE TALK" with any of the kids aside from some mother to daughter advice when the girls reached menarche. Somehow all my kids have achieved healthy, responsible adulthood. I just wish we'd had books like Prince and Prince and Heather Has Two Mommies. It would have made things easier for me and my gay daughter. Thank God for Buffie!

This woman is so afraid of human sexuality, she has to shield not only her own children (who will be just so grateful for that when they become adults and can't emotionally function in an adult sexual relationship,) but also all the other adults in the area.

But it seems that there are other nuts in the town, too. Ms. Swan thinks that the First Amendment can be abused in the name of getting weird and bizarre. So... a manual for adults is not weird and bizarre? Ironically enough, it is this very First Amendment right that allows Ms. Swan to sound as nutty as a squirrel.

I just love the irony of the rw.

P.S. The comments on the story link are hysterical. Someone, on page 13, actually claimed the Bible was banned!

I don't care for that policy, but in this case, I'll make an exception. I hope it fucking ruins this Nazi's chances of ever getting a loan or credit card ever again.

Oh yeah, and lady? You don't want the book falling into your child's hands? Keep them with you in the library! I work in a library and it sure would be good if some of the parents actually supervised their kids. (Not that all kids need supervision, most will just find books and read quietly or play on the computer. But there are many who run up and down isles, purposefully removed materials from the shelves and either put them else where or dump them on the floor, go into the restrooms to play in the sinks, etc., while their parents are sitting in the adult reading room, reading, or worse, napping!)

28. "Weird and bizarre"?
Looks like pretty basic vanilla het stuff to me.

When I was a kid, I had a sex manual for teenagers done in the Alex Comfort mode, with the same kind of beautiful, erotic but tasteful pencil drawings you get in the adult Joy of Sex books (available in straight, gay male, & lesbian versions, IIRC). It was pragmatic and realistic, giving real and valuable information about development, STDs, pregnancy, peer pressure, relationships; it showed people of different ethnicities and body types, etc., all in language that didn't talk down to young people. There were no hysterical scare tactics, but wasn't just "if it feels good, do it" hedonism either. A good companion to "Our Bodies, Ourselves," which I was also given shortly after I got my first period.

How can freaking out and hiding all possible sources of information about sex from kids possibly be good for them? I'm so glad I had liberal "sexual revolution" era parents (even though they were, and still are, monogamously married for over 40 years, they did not believe in the hype of "innocence," and did not think sex was something that could "corrupt" or "ruin" children via books and education).

This quote says it all. The religious right uses "protection of children" as a pretext. They really want to ban the material they don't like from EVERYONE, including adults. But they know that being upfront and honest about that desire won't fly.

I IIRC the cover picture is of a guy sitting between two girls, each sipping his or her own soda

There are a ton of brightly colored books that don't smell like mold that have lots of controversial topics in them. She could have run across a book on tantric yoga and her child would have been scarred for life.
