I also fail to see the purpose of that fairly new feature of "Unrec."!

7. It doesn't matter what you think...
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 03:38 AM by targetpractice
The unrecommend (not even a real word) feature is terribly ill-conceived and by it's very nature is designed to interject a simple, unthoughtful, reflexive negative opinion into your thread. The most remarkable attribute of this feature is the amount of ill-will it causes on DU.. apparently for the benefit of a few folks who don't have the energy or know-how to post thoughtful critiques or opinions... or filter posts on the "Greatest Page" to their liking.

As product manager and usability pro, I cringe whenever I see a captured user population (like us) complain about features of a product or service they've come to use and love because the "powers that be" have added new functionality that they think is good for us, or their business, or because they want to quell a population of high maintenance users that can't be pleased no matter what you give them.

Whenever the word "hate" is articulated by previously faithful and loyal users, the product owners should wake-up and realize they have a BIG problem on their hands... I follow user reactions to various products and services and I must say that I haven't seen users toss the word "hate" around about a feature like they do about the "un'rec" feature of DU... except like users recently have about Windows Vista. Microsoft, at least, has responded to criticism... DU seems to think they know better than users and have officially stated they are content with the addition of the poorly received "un'rec" option. It should be mentioned that web sites cannot be designed purely by responding to user suggestions and complaints... All site users must be considered in the feature design process... The silent, average, and content user population are the "base" not the complainers or edge-case mega-posters... That said, a site designer must consider the complaints carefully, but in the context of the overall user population.

There are many examples of social networking rating systems that work... iTunes' (five stars from "hate" to "love") to Facebook's "Like" option to YouTube's "thumbs up or down." The most important feature of ALL of the successful social network ranking methods is credibility and accountability of the ranker.... YouTube allows all users to rate each post, so the "hit-and-run-haters" are quickly identified and shunned. DU's anonymous "un-rec" feature allows anonymous users to post "hit-and-run" pot shots without justifying their reason by explicit explanation or by implicit reputation... The result is a feature tailor-made for lazy, personally revengeful, racist, hateful, humorless, and generally disruptive users. The result (for me) has been a remarkably negative and off-putting change for the DU environment.

Please understand my rant is to show my empathy for you... You took the time to post your thoughts... Your critics should be required to justify their response in an open manner and be subject to your response and the rebuttal of the DU community.

9. I am glad that I'm not the only one flummoxed by the irony.

The "un-rec" feature as implemented by DU is purely a vote suppression method... Not democratic in any sense.

At least in political elections, a citizen's anonymous vote represents a point of view... Their vote embodies a set of positions re: political issues by a candidate opposed to the other candidates' points-of-view.

An "un-rec" click on DU simply negates or robs the expression of another user's insights or opinions... without offering another point-of-view or argument to the discussion. Thoughtful posts deserve more than binary responses in return... Such simple thinking is the hallmark of Conservatives, Republicans, and Freepers. DU posters are not gladiators in the Coliseum in Rome.

11. thanks.. more Eloquent than i am, one thing that is missed about ReThug thinking is that it is a
Cult. they use "Apriori" logic the Conclusion comes first and the Premise follows.. this system of perception does not work, where ever one tries to inform the victim of the source of their problems.. they will come to the same conclusion..their problems are external and you are the cause, and you just proved that to them.. there is actually no way to deal with them, it is a form of insanity. the methods the Oligarchs use change the physical structure of the brain.. ushering the victim into an alternate reality. even in a rare moment of clarity in a rock bottom event, when the victim realizes the truth it takes at least a year of assisted coordinated counseling to get back to the real world.. un assisted it takes 3 to 4 years. they may never get out if their family is involved.

cult Oligarchs use this system to create "Troops", ...political/religious "Soldiers". it is the heart of the Republican Party, Fascism and religious fanaticism. i heard Rush Limbaugh say.. 'if you disagree with me ..keep listening, pretty soon you will understand an become one of us'. they know exactly what they are doing,
______________

GOP is a Cargo Cult of OCD Wealth Hoarders, they believe that wealth is the Measure of gODs favor of a man, therefore it is a sin to tax a Rich Man/Corporation. the poor are being punished by gOD, therefore it is a sin to help them. and they use Mafia tactics to enforce their ideology to keep the money/power coming. they are Psychotic, out of control and manipulate any criticism as a conspiracy theory insanity. they don't like the French simply because they were the first to come up with an effective means of dealing with the Wealth Hoarding Psychotic cult Oligarchs.. they F'n removed them from the Gene Pool. i believe the success of France's socialist government has been due to their early Revolution's Eugenics program.

we need to spread this message and reveal the truth to the people they've conned into supporting this insanity. Psychotic Oligarchs think anything they do to horde more wealth is ordained by gOD, anyone they hurt deserves it..

the GOP is a Psychotic Cult.. they Kill People, men women children in their quest to Horde more and more needless Wealth/Power
40,000 a year with no health care, half a million supporting the Tobacco industry...1200 people die every day from Tobacco addiction. 1080 of those were addicted as children, 540 of the 1080 were addicted under the age of 12.!!! no one cry's louder about regulation of tobacco than a Republican.
