Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP)— A publicist for the singer Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of pop star Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley, said she was hospitalized Saturday in Manhattan for an undisclosed condition.

The 23-year-old's publicist, Claire Mercuri, said Saturday that Joel is in stable condition and receiving treatment. She declined to say why she had been hospitalized.

"We are currently assessing her needs," she said.

WABC in New York reports that Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of singer Bill Joel, has been rushed to the hospital after overdosing on an unknown amount of pills. WABC cites sources saying she was attempting to commit suicide and that she had recently broken up with her boyfriend.

You're Only Human (Second Wind) was, I believe, a song written to try to address adolescent suicide.

Especially among st those who seemingly have it all. Cue the swooning couch. She will luckily get the help she needs and more power to that and yet I have a nagging worry about those same instances in those who have nothing.

7. As a short, ugly, friendless, 40-year-old unemployed man...
Edited on Sat Dec-05-09 09:04 PM by oedura
...who's never even dated and who's been suffering from crippling depression and suicidal thoughts for over 25 years, I'd like to be there when the doctor's announce that she's in the clear so that I can run into her hospital room and give her a good whack upside the back of her ignorant head.

I'd like to be sympathetic, but I really can't. Hope she makes a swift recovery so she can get her hormone-addled head screwed on straight.

11. Disgusting lack of consideration for her family...
She's a young, attractive woman, apparently with a career of her her own and probably a lot of friends for support.

She's going to kill herself and put her family through hell because things didn't work out with one guy?

16. Everybody has their own hell
And although you think she has every advantage, you really don't know what her life is like.

Sounds like you are making your life worse if the attitude that comes through your post is any indication.

I hope you find the help and peace you need.

BTW, I'm 40-something and unemployed as well. My house is freezing and I have no money to even get the dog groomed. Frankly, I'm more than a little depressed as well.

BUT, I am not angry, bitter and devoid of compassion. You may not be able to immediately change your circumstances, but you can certainly change your attitude.

33. Unattractiveness isn't the only cause of depression
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 01:34 PM by t0dd
Attractive people that seem to have everything going for them may wrestle with inner demons just like you. I find it appalling you'd make such a comment. YOU are the ignorant one. If you really knew about depression, you'd know it affects people for a multitude of reasons and that anyone dealing with the horrendous disease deserves sympathy. What unites most people in depression is a sense of hopelessness and a detached view of the future. There aren't a set of physical characteristics that make one immune to its effects, and it is incredibly naive to think otherwise.

21. "singer"
She had every advantage, many a singer has to fight like hell to get a chance and could be very talented and never get one, and she would have had it handed to her on a silver platter. Just another proof that depression is a disease that knows no bounds.

27. Not our business.
I certainly hope she and her family find a good way through this crisis. But I wish that we had never heard about it. It should be so private.

Oddly, too, it serves to distract too many folks from issues where they might help effect real change.

35. Depression is an issue where we can"effect real change". It is critical
that the public face more awareness of this issue and understand that it can affect anyone. And in these awful times it is more important than ever that we learn to understand this condition.

40. Yes, but
Yes,we should educate and learn about this crippling condition, treat it, and ensure access to treatment for people who need and want it.

But shouldn't she be the one to decide to make her depression a public issue?

And do we really know she was depressed? How do we know it? Did she want it disclosed?

46. Wonder how much her parents relationships play a role in how messed up she is.
Her parents divorced in 1994 and Billy remarried in 2004 to Katie Lee who was just 5 years old than Alexa. Billy and Katie split up in June 2009 at which point Alexa commented that she wasn't surprised because her dad isn't very good at picking women.

Her Mom remarried in 1994 to Richard Taubman, whom she became engaged to while still married to Billy. They divorced in 1995 and in 1996 she married Peter Cook. In 2008 she divorced Peter Cook because he was having an affiar with their 18 year old babysitter and spent thousands of dollars a month on internet porn.

People - your relationships to have a huge effect on your kids and their own relationships. This didn't hit me with her until I read the line at the end where she had recently broken up with her boyfriend. Hopefully she gets some help.
