Copenhagen climate summit: 1,200 limos, 140 private planes and caviar wedges
On a normal day, Majken Friss Jorgensen, managing director of Copenhagen's biggest limousine company, says her firm has twelve vehicles on the road. During the "summit to save the world", which opens here tomorrow, she will have 200.

"We thought they were not going to have many cars, due to it being a climate convention," she says. "But it seems that somebody last week looked at the weather report."

Ms Jorgensen reckons that between her and her rivals the total number of limos in Copenhagen next week has already broken the 1,200 barrier. The French alone rang up on Thursday and ordered another 42. "We haven't got enough limos in the country to fulfil the demand," she says. "We're having to drive them in hundreds of miles from Germany and Sweden."

And the total number of electric cars or hybrids among that number? "Five," says Ms Jorgensen. "The government has some alternative fuel cars but the rest will be petrol or diesel. We don't have any hybrids in Denmark, unfortunately, due to the extreme taxes on those cars. It makes no sense at all, but it's very Danish."

The airport says it is expecting up to 140 extra private jets during the peak period alone, so far over its capacity that the planes will have to fly off to regional airports – or to Sweden – to park, returning to Copenhagen to pick up their VIP passengers.

As well 15,000 delegates and officials, 5,000 journalists and 98 world leaders, the Danish capital will be blessed by the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio, Daryl Hannah, Helena Christensen, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Prince Charles. A Republican US senator, Jim Inhofe, is jetting in at the head of an anti-climate-change "Truth Squad." The top hotels – all fully booked at £650 a night – are readying their Climate Convention menus of (no doubt sustainable) scallops, foie gras and sculpted caviar wedges.

I for one am glad to have all these distinguished gentlemen and women come together in one place to finally get the rest of us to cut down on our wasteful and extravagant lifestyles.

I won't begrudge them the swanky dining or high priced whores.

like the folks at the vatican, preaching the virtues of a simple life to those living on less than a dollar a day (all the while returning to their own private mansions). If they're working for the best interests of everyone who can begrudge them a private waterpark or two?

14. Nice deflection. The OP didn't mentione whores AT ALL,
and only mentioned dining in the context of fish bait, which is what I consider caviar to be.

Of course you don't care to talk about 1200 limos or 140 private jets. That's inconvenient.

AS IF there aren't enough commercial aircraft flying to Copenhagen. AS IF there isn't a way to secure some kind of mass transportation from their swanky hotels to wherever it is they're meeting on a particular day.

And here you are, telling people to GROW UP. :puke:  :yourock: :sarcasm:

82. You may not have read the article, but the link in the OP did talk about prostitution
What it did not talk about are all the corporate executives that will be flying out to Copenhagan and riding around in limos, not everyone at this conference is serious about combating global warming and in fact many are trying to kill any meaningful treaty.

The article linked talked about prostitutes and caviar instead of the serious issues related to global warming, this is a right-wing smear piece and I see no reason why I should fall for this type of "reporting".

116. Wrong, it's hypocritical, and people need to start leading
by example. Although I admit I'm on the fence now about global warming because of the recent e-mails, but in the past the people I respected were the Ed Begley Jr's and the Darryl Hannah's because they talked the talk and walked the walk. This can't be justified and it's wrong and it makes the entire movement look like fools.

Obama should set an example by crossing the Atlantic in a sailboat.
When he arrives in Copenhagen he should hop on an electric bicycle and ride to the conference.
Right-wing critics would really respect that.

118. If the owners of the telegraph
were the leading proponents of manmade global warming, and seeking legislature that would affect all of us directly, and constantly telling the peasants to limit their wasteful extravagance then they too would be hypocrites.

Consider two people smoking, one has said he has no issue with smoking, the other is a leading voice in the prohibition of tobacco and routinely rails against the evil of nicotine.

Which one is the hypocrite?

93. How about they plane sharing and some nice shuttle buses.
Nobody is saying go 0 carbon but most of them are releasing more carbon than a family of 4 in a year to talk about how to reduce carbon.

I mean private jets (and so many they fly empty to other airports to wait) and limo that have to be driven across Europe to get to the event? Come on. They could do something better than that.

96. Let's do some math
40.5 thousand tonnes / 15,000 participants that's less than 3 tonnes per person

US per capita in 2006 : 19 tonnes

However, you are correct that there are families of 4 in Bangladesh, Cameroon and the like emitting less than 1.5 tonnes. per year.

Aside from the fact that Denmark is offsetting the emuissions by building 20 brick factories in Bangladesh to replace existing ones, there is a lot of waste. Government delegations from the US, EU and Australia need to be slashed; corporations should be banned. However, what they are all about is getting the most beneficial deal for themselves - why any deal the get will likely be a poor one.

you see if these grand folks are willing to go to such extravagance for our sakes then clearly there is something worth looking at here. Surely they wouldn't waste such festivities on a non-issue. You can tell by their conspicuous consumption that they really feel this is a serious issue. And if those noble people think it is worth looking in to then clearly it is.

It's only fair that they enjoy such luxuries while admonishing us to tighten our belts. They're entitled to such treatment for feasting and vacationing tirelessly on our behalf.

why should taking a private jet to an airport in sweden, to be dropped off in copenhagen in time to catch your private limo to a 16 star resort in anyway take away from the message of responsible consumption, conservation and limiting your carbon footprint? Clearly these guys believe it is a major concern, and are "walking the walk", it's only reasonable to expect us to fall in to line as well.

45. No, your intentions here are quite clear.
And nobody has demanded any belt tightening as far as I know. By the way, there are several large global corporations that, after examining the issues around catastrophic climate change, concluded that it was, oddly enough, in their economic self interest to move forward on reducing their carbon footprint, increasing their energy efficiency, and converting as much of their energy use as possible to renewable sustainable sources, ahead of any concerted government action. Rather than belt tightening, these efforts increased and continue to increase the profitability of these corporations. There is a great TED talk on this, but you won't be interested as it does not fit into your ideologically wall-eyed perspective.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP9QF_lBOyA if you are open minded enough.

105. The really funny part of this
is that I live a fairly frugal life. So my carbon footprint is miniscule compared to many of those who claim carbon will kill us all.

I would gladly be a shill for the global warming hysterics if I could get a free trip to copenhagen, some limo rides and a private jet though.

Who do I talk to about that? It's easy work; the world will die if we don't do something immediately, for my part I will order the filet mignon, medium rare and don't skip on the horseradish sauce unless you want the world to burn!

29. The funny thing is that even if there ARE meaningful changes brought about by this conference
Those changes won't be felt or suffered by the elites. They'll STILL go on flying around the world in their private jets, STILL go from the airport to their hotel in LIMOS, STILL have fresh bait (caviar) flown in for the chefs who travel with them to put on a plate (with crackers to cut the taste), even as we lower our standard of living to accomodate the new rules and regulations brought about by their coming stewardship of the planet. They'll STILL build their McMansions that use enough power in a month to power a hundred of our crackerboxes.

And DU'ers will STILL go on defending them for speaking out against the unwashed masses who continue to drive RV's in their retirement years.

Life... It's good if you have money.

has made a mockery of how dire this problem is. Hollywood nitwits, poseurs, and business interests have made the problem larger, as the double standard is invoked and now you can have your glass cleaner or some other chemical shit made by "windpower."

More than half the people at that conference are to do business, and it's not the kind of business that helps the environment.

108. I've found that if you want people to make radical changes
in their lifestyle then you should be willing to do the same.

Also, if you're trying to convince people that there is a major problem then acting like there is a major problem rather than business as usual is a good start.

If you stand up at your desk at work, calmly say "fire" then sit down and go back to work as if nothing happened then people may not take you seriously.

Go figure.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the one who decided to have two decades of stagnating wages and crappy trade agreements that led to the only affordable necessities anywhere to purchase were cheap breakable plastic crap manufactured in china full of lead and shoddy clothes from slave labor factories around the world.

And yes I will talk. I share a vehicle, almost 11 years old, which I drive 12 miles a week, rent a 250 sq ft studio apt, did not breed any generations of future super consumers and only buy what I absolutely need such as clothes, food and a minimal amount of electricity. My life has been spent in the working class so I have always lived small.

"They" are attempting to have their cake and eat it too. There will be no real changes and "they" could really care less because "they" are pampered, spoiled elite who don't believe their shit stinks. The very large problem lies firmly in their laps as a result of the gluttony of their personal and corporate ventures worldwide.

Perhaps the middle class and above can find some common ground with the super polluters but don't include me. That's one thing about living towards the bottom of the economic ladder. Over consumption and hoarding is not a problem. That takes money.

107. Hehe, but they believe in it
no? They believe carbon emissions will doom us all, but carry on as if nothing were different.

So either A) they are lying and don't believe any of it, B) they do believe it, but are greatly exaggerating the effects to scare the commoners, or C) they believe it and think what they are doing is part of the problem, but just don't give a damn.

Tell me, which one of those is supposed to inspire confidence in their judgment?

It's like when a prominent baptist preacher get's involved in a gay sex scandal involving drugs and prostitutes. I don't have any issue with the drugs, or prostitutes or what two adults choose to do on their free time. But the fact that he has come out and denounced those behaviors in everyone else makes him a hypocrite and worthy of contempt.

You see? Saying one thing and doing another (in fact trying to create laws to force people to act contrary to how you choose to behave) is not an endearing trait.

Just imagine they were auto CEOs flying their private jets to DC to beg for money. Doesn't that make your blood boil!

And yet that is still not enough to convince them to live merely extravagantly, rather than in unimaginable opulence. I mean, global warming ate that poor girls stuffed animal for christs sake! It doesn't get much worse than that.

Kind of reminds me of the pope telling people how great it is to be poor, and how that will help you get in to heaven, and won't you please give until it hurts? Then hopping in his private jet and flying back to one of his mansions.

Of course when he does it he's considered a hypocrite, rather than a hero . . . . hm.

I am sure you can find plenty of examples of people who are not practicing what they preach as well, but I am sure I could pull out just as many examples of delegates from Copenhagan who really are working hard to live a green lifestyle.

And let's not pretend that everyone in Copenhagan is trying to fix the climate crisis, there are many of global warming deniers and corporate representatives out there trying to weaken the deal and no doubt a number of the limos belong to them.

Maybe Daryl Hannah is a hypocrite, but why should that matter to anyone? We have a major issue on our hands and people here are ringing their hands over what celebrities drive to the conference about that issue. Daryl Hannah is completely irrelevant, what is relevant is that the polar ice caps are melting and we have people who are more concerned about pointing out the hypocrisy of a movie actress than they are with saving the planet.

81. This is a global conference open to people from many walks of life...
I have a friend who is in Copenhagan right now, he is not a climate scientist but he is an environmental activist who just finished a 500 mile bike ride to raise awareness of the threat posed by global warming. I assure you that he is not riding around in a limo.

We need activists like him out there and there are celebrity activists as well, Leonardo DiCaprio has done an enormous amount of work to raise awareness of climate change and the roles of people like him play are important because he has a big microphone that can reach a lot of people. Now it is possible that Leonardo DiCaprio is riding in a limo but quite frankly I am not concerned about his imperfections because his ride to the convention is not in itself going to make a significant impact on global warming. Climate change deniers are always trying to get us to focus on the imperfections of a few climate change activists while ignoring the bigger issue, to really fix the climate crisis we can not work on an individual level we need to change policy in a way that effects everyone. That is what this is about, policy. It is not about individual decisions, and while it may be great when individuals do things to reduce their own carbon footprint in order to really tackle this issue we need governments to change their laws and regulations. That is what this conference is about, it is not about celebrities as much as the climate change deniers want to distract you.
