Former Sen. Santorum 'absolutely taking a look' at possible 2012 presidential bid
By Tony Romm - 12/07/09 02:32 PM ET

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R) on Monday afternoon signaled that he is seriously mulling a possible 2012 presidential bid for the Republican party's nomination.

"Absolutely -- absolutely taking a look," he told ABC's "Top Line" webcast this afternoon.

"But look -- I'm doing it in the context that right now, there's very important matters, and I want to weigh into those matters as to what the Republican Party stands for in 2010," Santorum added.

The former Pennsylvania senator has previously exhibited an interest in running in 2012. However, he has to this point hedged his language quite a bit, allowing his travel plans -- to typical presidential battlegrounds like Iowa and South Carolina -- to do most of the talking for him.

5. Did somebody say "frothy"?
From Wiki (DU software doesn't like the parens):

Santorum is a sexual neologism proposed by American humorist and sex-advice columnist Dan Savage in 2003 to "memorialize" then US Republican Senator Rick Santorum from Pennsylvania due to the controversy over his statements on homosexuality. Savage asked his readers to submit new definitions for the term; the winning definition was "that frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex."

guess they're a little bit slow on the uptake. :dunce:

edit: Bonus factoid: There is a secondary meaning to the phrase "going rogue", also having to do with gay sex!

So far, we are being told that all the loud, Internet bickering won't make a difference in 2012. We'll see.

16. Interesting that all Republican likely candidates
come from outside politics. It's almost as if trying to govern and legislate as a Republican is surest way to turn off your base. Conservatism looks good on paper I guess to these people, but god knows they don't like seeing it in action.

Pennsylvania would vote for fungus scraped off the underneath of a rock before voting for that idiot from Virginia

23. We can put him on the GOP ticket with Sarah P.
Imagine, the Queen of the Iquitarod and a former US Senator who got a whopping 38% of the total vote in a two-way race in his last bid for re-election.

Visualize a 50-state-plus-DC sweep for Obama.

28. I have no idea what these folks are like in person but that picture to me
appears to suggest enormous distance and cluelessness. There is a remove of a foot or a yard or so between each of the members of that family but it FEELS like light years. There is no emotional psychic glue among the people in that picture.

Perhaps it is because Daddy just lost a U.S. Senate race by almost 20 percentage points but it feels like a lot more than that.

The people in that photograph seemed marooned to me. Emotionally unchartable.

folks don't like him all that much, which is neither here nor there at a philosophical level but matters quite a bit in politics.

His own State's voters threw him out of the Senate. If he enters the Iowa caucus fracas to which Republican voters is he likely to appeal in large enough percentages to do better there than against Democrat Bob Casey in Pennsylvania?

Right now it feels as if Santorum's mighty ego is inflating to far limits inside a toolshed. I'd eagerly bet against his chances for the Republican nomination.

Also the field is beginning to crowd up. Ensign and Sanford would appear to be out of the running, although rumors were strong that both were interested in the job before they were exposed as adulterers.

Certain Pukes are starting to train their attention on Iowa. I'm wondering which of the potential candidates Santorum thinks he can whip. Palin? Maybe, but by no means certainly. Romney? I doubt it. Huckabee -- if he somehow survives the cop-killer scandal whiff -- no, because Huckabee appears to be charming despite his far Right kookery while Santorum, who is just as far Right and kooky, comes across as a scorched-earth monster.

Maybe it's Santorum's role -- by design or by inadvertence -- to split Palin's caucus support in exchange for a plum cabinet role or chief-of-staff in a Romney White House.

Just thinking outloud. I'm not seeing Santorum winning the GOP nom because the demographic is too small, what of it that aligns with his scorched-earth politics may split several ways to deny him traction, and not least, he's a repellent lizard.
