Tiger Woods' popularity dropping
Tiger Woods' popularity dropping since revelation of alleged mistresses, shows new poll
BY Corky Siemaszko
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Monday, December 7th 2009, 12:33 PM

A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll shows Wood's favorable rating among the public has dropped 24 percentage points since June.

The world's greatest golfer, who has been linked to at least a half-dozen mistresses since Thanksgiving, was viewed as "favorable" by 60% of those surveyed in the new poll, compoared to 84% in June.

His "unfavorable" rating has climbed up to 25% from 9% in the same period.

Why do these numbers matter? Because about 90% of the millions Woods earns are for endorsements - not for his golfing.

Woods' squeaky-clean image as a married family man has been all but demolished by reports that he cavorted with six women.

Woods is holding onto his big bucks backers - at least for now.

11. I just think he needs to ask himself if these mistresses were worth the tens of millions
he's going to wind up shelling out as a result - whether to his wife, as some reports have suggested, or in legal work, lost endorsements. Maybe they were worth it?

15. Kobe cheated, admitted to it and moved on. Tiger didn't just cheat, he had relationships.
And, not with just one women, but with many women. Some of these affairs have been going on for years.

50. Only because he wasn't allowed to marry Camilla.
I don't believe that Diana knew it was a marriage of convenience.

Perhaps it might be comparable had Tiger only had one "mistress" but he has many.

Camilla was the love of Charles' life, I don't believe Tiger knew any of these women prior to his marriage.

The Royal family is very odd in their practices, in my opinion.

which is the problem.

It does remind me of Princess Di, as someone else said. Charles never let her in on the fact that their marriage was all PR, either.

And, it's obvious from Elin's reaction that she truly believed that they took vows of fidelity.

If couples want to pursue open marriages - fine - as long as both partners agree to it.

24. I'm sensitive to racial elements in coverage. In this case, it seems no different that the Elliot
spitzer case.. a few days of shock as the details emerge. More attention paid because of the whole crashing the mercedes while the wife is swinging a golf club. Not sure if Tiger is getting more attention than a white celebrity with so much moral standing would receive. Can't really think of a white celebrity with the same amount of Fame and moral standing, come to think of it.

Like I said, the Elliot Spitzer case comes to mind.

Yeah, he made a terrible choice, but there is no way in Hell that all of his endorsements are going to dry up. Tiger and Nike willl remain synonymous, and I willl wager that he banks another billion dollars to go with the billion he has already collected before he's done.
He is the best on the planet at what he does. Whether you like it or not (and I don't, particularly) the rules are different for the Tigers of the world. He will continue to make more money in a year, than you are likely to amass in a lifetime. If that's toast, I'd like butter on mine.

It's not that he cheated, but that he carried on numerous long term affairs with all these other
women.

An affair wouldn't have been such a big deal, some people do cheat, but to have long term affairs with all of these women is shocking.

How many are we up to now, 6? 8?

It's hard to keep track.

17. This is pretty shocking to me, if true:
>>Lawton's sister, Lynn, an Orlando grade-school teacher, told the Mail on Sunday that the golfer failed to practice safe sex with Mindy and "treated my sister like a piece of meat."

"My sister was just a little girl on an hourly wage. ... We knew what he wanted her for. But she wouldn't believe it," Lynn Lawton said. <<

86. Tiger is a great athlete and a jerk . . .
I'm sure this is especially hurtful to the minority communities --

And fodder for racists --

And it's sad, indeed --

When you begin talking about 9 girlfriends, things are way out of hand --

but, of course, I don't really know what the numbers might be among rich and famous athletes!

Presumably, many of them are engaging in this kind of behavior?

Quite a few wives of athletes must be giving their spouses and lives some thought these days?

From the event the morning of the day after Thanksgiving, perhaps Tiger's wife was completely

unaware?

And, Tiger is offering money to buy -- ahem, win her back for two years?!!

?????

I think one of the children is quite a newborn?

hey, if the rich and famous and beautiful do it, it must be ok.

So we can picture Tiger moving from side to side in car to avoid golf club smashing the window. Talk radio thought this was comedy gold.

Switch genders in the scenario...no one would be laughing at woman found lying unconscious, face scratched, tooth knocked out...husband nearby with golf clubs.

By the way, I'm female.

I hate what he did to his wife, but I liked him for his golfing talent.
As long as he remains a talented golfer, I will still watch him.

Judging by the amount of coverage he's getting, not to mention all the women he's sleeping with.

60. The Damage Is Done...He's Box Office Poison
Last weekend was his "charity" golf tournament and not only wasn't he a no show in person, but also on the teevee. Tiger's big value isn't the money he makes on winning tournaments but on those commercials...and if they can't show him hawking shoes or cars or widgets, he's toast...he's just another duffer and worse. The "old" Tiger...the "role model" or whatever Nike dreamed him up to be is over...and that's the real damage done here no matter how things turn out.

61. I don't agree. I think it will take more than this to bring him down.
He will remain a popular golfer because he is just that good. He is apparently a sucky ass husband though.

63. He's Now Just A Golfer
He may be able to "rehabilitate" himself to some fans, but his value as a pitchman that goes outside the golf world has taken a major hit. A week ago when this first came out I might have agreed...had this been one "indiscretion" he could have "rehabiliated" himself by winning a bunch of tournaments. But now with his ham-handed admission along with the steady stream of "groupies", he's lost credibility with many; especially women. For an advertiser, when you lose credibility or your negatives shoot up as quickly as his, he's not the person you want shilling your shoes...and without that corporate juice, the Tiger "legend" now focuses on his philandering. Just like there are those who now cheer Michael Vick cause he's scoring touchdowns, he's surely not going to be the spokesperson for any major corporate. Tiger literally screwed his own pooch.

64. I can't get the comparison with Vick. And let's face it, Vick was never
Tiger. Tiger is arguably the biggest athlete in the world. He does have a lot to lose. We'll just have to wait and see. I hope he doesn't lose his endorsements. He got them because he was/is the best golfer around, and brought the sport into a whole new light. He is still that talented player, only with a sucky personal life right now. What Vick did was one of the most disgusting things on the planet. Not that what Tiger did isn't disgusting, but they are two different kinds of disgusting.

72. It's Credibility
I'm no golf fan, but I appreciate what he represents to the sport and it's up to those who buy the golf clubs and watch the tournaments to judge his value as an athlete. My point is he was used beyond the golf world as a symbol...a "role model" and nice guy that sold shoes and cars and razor blades. Those endorsements are based on personality rather than "skill"...an image that is now tarnished no matter how things shake out.

The Vick comparison is about those fans who are now cheering him and willing to forgive cause he could lead his team to the playoffs...its detached from his personality. Disgusting is disgusting...especially when it comes to credibility...and there's no national advertiser that will use Vick as their spokesman cause of his notariety...while not as heinous or illegal, what Woods has done is as much a sin to one's credibility...he no longer can play "role model". And right be it so.

I think the longer this scandal drags out, the less stomache his corporates will have...and the bigger a soiled dove Tiger becomes...you can't sell shoes with a cloud over your head.

Cheers...

I think you are right. His sponsors may very well not want him anymore. One affair is one thing that might be forgiven. But now being accused of having multiple, long-term affairs - it must be sexual addiction. ;-)

Dr. Drew. He'll fix him right up on his reality show about just that. Ya, that's the ticket.

So sorry for his wife, She must be just beyond herself.

68. Maybe it is because my Dad was a womanizing golfer but I
couldn't care less what women Tiger has been involved with. That he had many girlfriends isn't going to impact my purchasing decisions and if he played at a tournament in my area I'd still been in the gallery.

I care if my spouse is unfaithful. Beyond, that it really is none of my business.

I don't know, it's just something about him. I didn't know him but he acted too snooty for me. Maybe he was just on the quiet side that threw me. I am shy and quiet and people thought I was snooty so I shouldn't think that way about people I don't know.

79. I wonder whether his popularity will really be affected among men
I would guess that a pretty significant number of the people buying Tiger Woods-endorsed products are men, who might not be as bothered by his rampant cheating on women as many women would be.

I could be wrong--maybe men are as offended by his behavior as I am (well, "offended" is too strong a word--"put off" is a better phrase)--but I bet they aren't.

80. why is Tiger held to a different standard than, say, entertainers
Bruce Springsteen -- cheated on his wife. just got Kennedy Center Honors
David Letterman -- don't see his show being cancelled do you?
Donald Trump -- he'd be a jerk if had been faithful to his wife, and he still got a tv show

and the list goes on and on...
