Not only does that stink...it is potentially deadly. I live on Long Island too, and too often you hear about people falling into their cesspools, many of which die from drowning or inhalation of toxic fumes. Not a pretty way to go. The worst is during winter when heavy snows come. Most people forget where their cesspool is and end up falling through. God forbid they could just build some damn sewers out here and do away with these fakakta cesspools!

4. I fell into our cesspool when I was 10 years old.
It had rained heavily and saturated the soil, and the cover gave way. Fortunately, my parents were outside and my dad tossed me a rope and pulled me out. Then, I got to enjoy the humiliation of standing naked in the back yard while I got hosed off, with my sister and a couple of her friends watching and laughing.

In fact, pretty much the whole neighborhood showed up to watch the rescue and decontamination hosing. I'm glad I was only 10 and not 14 or something. Now, that would have been truly embarrassing.

It's pretty funny now, but then, not so much...

7. Yah, pretty much everyone was laughing their ass off.
It took me a couple of hours to see the humor. But, then, I started laughing, too. I'm pretty resilient, I guess. My sister, however, a year younger, took great pleasure in pointing out my shortcomings. Little trollop!

6. Well, better to be alive and humiliated
then to be...well, not so fortunate.

8. Just one adventure in an adventurous childhood.
No lasting effect, although I do steer clear of backyards with cesspools these days.

9. Seriously - people get killed digging trenches every year.
OSHA guidelines if you're interested:

Quick card

Gory details:

http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/construction/trenching/protective_systems.html

NIOSH recommends that:

* shoring systems or sloping of the walls be used in all excavations 5 to 24 feet deep in any type of soil, except solid, stable rock.
* appropriate shoring, shielding, or sloping requirements for all excavations deeper than 24 feet (except those in unfractured rock) be determined by an engineer qualified to make these determinations.
* all employers engaged in excavation activities familiarize themselves with the provisions of the NBS/NIOSH document (Development of Draft Construction Safety Standards for Excavation) and implement them as safe work practices in addition to compliance with the existing OSHA standards.
