9. Seriously, there may come a day when children will never know the absence of war.
Afghanistan is set to continue indefinitely. Could it end up being a 20 year-long war? It seems like it. We're almost at the half-way mark now. We will probably be involved in more oil wars in the future.

11. Fewer people grow up believing the fairytales that used to fuel that mythical 'sense of duty.'
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 08:02 AM by Echo In Light
While, and, especially given the unprecedented access to all kinds of info on the internet, the numbers of those who'd sooner tell Big Brother to go fuck himself has increased dramatically. Couple that with a dying empire's inability to provide work that speaks to obtaining the mythical 'American Dream,' and that results in an even stronger opposition to those who need to control the message via Perception Management in order to get people to believe in non-existent notions of defending freedom, and other easily disprovable slogan chanting.

15. But people will still join the military, likely due to financial hardship.
You get a place to sleep and meals each day in the service. That's something that's often missing on the streets of cities like LA or Detroit or NYC. Like Rome before us, military service will become something most people would avoid if at all possible because they will figure out soon enough getting blown up for some rich man's treasure doesn't help their lot in life any bit. When politicians simply run for the gold instead of to serve their community, the game will come to an end soon enough, and the capital will be sacked, its walls and buildings pulled down by marauding thugs bent on sacking the public wealth.

16. To an extent, maybe. I know & have known many poor, & none of them would consider the military as...
... an option. Maybe that's my own experience coloring that perspective, but I don't foresee big numbers enlisting to kill and be killed for three squares and a roof over their head - besides, the military brass learned from Vietnam that ordinary, average civilians don't hold up well doing jobs the corporate interests require mercenary mentality for.

12. Like...today?
My middle school students were young enough when the bogus "war on terror" started that they don't remember a time without war already.

Their younger siblings were born into a nation at war.

14. Just think, Jefferson, Madison et al gave the People the power, through congress
to declare war or not. I wonder what they would have to say about
the total disregard for that concept shown today

Now most have forgotten they ever had the power.

Amendment by amendment, line by line, concept by concept
what was bought with blood and tears is slowly erased and forgotten.

When Nancy Pelosi can say that questions regarding the Constitutionality
of forcing people to buy health insurance is "not important" and get away
with it without a single sound being made... well...
They deserve to lose it. Like Franklin said.
