Rachel Maddow: "I'm Reading It From Your Book, Dude"
Edited on Tue Dec-08-09 10:24 PM by Hissyspit
Rachel is TRASHING the "gay can be cured" guy, Richard Cohen, on her show. He attributes "race" as a contributing cause to gayness. He said that it wasn't in the book, even as she read it from the book in her hand. Guy is not licensed by any accrediting body. He CANNOT defend himself. Says his expulsion from the ACA was that he was a "victim of a hate crime." Yes, you read that right - the guy whose work, as Rachel repeatedly proved to him (and along with Rick Warren), is being used in Uganda to justify murdering gays. I will try to find the video. This is hilarious.

He said he was going to take the "pedophile" statistics out of the next edition. :eyes:

This guy:

Expulsion from the ACA

In 2002 Cohen was permanently expelled from the American Counseling Association, after it accused him of six violations of its ethics code, which bars members from actions which "seek to meet their personal needs at the expense of clients, those that exploit the trust and dependency of clients, and for soliciting testimonials or promoting products in a deceptive manner."

Richard Cohen’s contribution to pass the Anti-Homosexuality Bill
Posted on December 8th, 2009 by Warren

One of the major reasons Ugandans give for their support for the Anti-Homosexuality Bill is to stop recruitment of children and young men to homosexuality. Despite the lack of evidence demonstrating a systematic recruitment effort, the view of child abuse and homosexuality being about the same persists in the rationale given for the bill.

Scott Lively promotes this idea and he has been a colleague of Stephen Langa since at least 2002. Thus, when Langa wanted people to come to Uganda to whip up public calls for a new law, he asked Lively to return. He also asked Richard Cohen’s assistant Caleb Brundidge to speak. Cohen was there in spirit however in the form of Brundidge and his book Coming Out Straight. During the Rachel Maddow Show last night, Cohen’s book was display by Stephen Langa and Cohen was labeled an authority. No wonder, homosexuality is considered a disorder in this book, albeit a curable one. However, the book also contains dark and sinister descriptions of homosexuals, which no doubt played well into Langa’s designs.

It reminds me of someone like larry craig who has the gayness (in bathrooms anyway) yet he chooses to cause damage to the lives of gays by his actions. This guy is worse of course because his work might lead to murdering gays.

He would have said he was going to take it out of the next book. If she had been able to read everything to him the next book would have been blank. The best of all possible worlds, unless he had never showed his mugly face to begin with.

What a fraud he is, and what a good job she is doing with all of the frauds she encounters. The best of the best.:fistbump:

Awesome how she so skillfully cuts him off at the pass each time he desperately tries squirming out of the turkey traps she herds him into.
This instructional video should be required viewing for all advanced doctoral candidates in the fine fine art of *jiu jitsu interviewing and/or by professional master chefs on how to carve up a live squawking turkey, making him wish he were a dead duck or prefer being sadistically waterboarded by a scowling cock cheney, instead of being congenially interviewed by a beautifully beaming Rachel.

...but in this one, there are people who really do say things like that flatly. And others who are likely more nuanced, but are skipping over those to keep the post brief.

It happens with everything communicated by short informal text messages (like message board postings), not just politics. In pre-Net college days, I was part of a club that used a log book for people to leave messages for each other (and for others, simply to opine or share their attempts at poetry). Unbelievable how many fights that book caused because sarcasm just didn't translate to prose properly. Made me see the usefulness of emoticons right off the bat ;)

I made the mistake of presuming it would be obvious without the :sarcasm:.

If I had my way so-called "ex-gay" "therapy" would be banned. It's unscientific, hateful and even downright harmful. But since the charlatans who push it do so under the banner of "religious freedom" they're allowed to foist it upon desperate LGBT people, intolerant parents, and ignorant masses who actually think you can "cure" the perfectly natural orientation of homosexuality.

80. Gee, the President of the United States stands with Ex-Gays
and that sort of legitimizing emboldens these hate soaked con men. He has been told over and over, by people of great standing, that it is allowable and even laudable to slander gay people. His peer Donnie McClurkin, who has said much worse things on many more TV shows, was Obama's hand selected host and only speaker at campaign events. Democrats, including Obama, defended McClurkin's hate speech, in great detail and with unmistakable clarity. McClurkin has said that gay people 'are trying to kill our children' and Obama hired, praised and defended this when it was called out into the spotlight.
This guy just thinks he's part of the bi partisan anti minority mainstream, just like Donnie and Barack and Michelle, and their other friends like Rick Warren and Kirbyjon Caldwell.

61. I don't think they'd
qualify themselves as homophobes, but devout christians that agree that homosexuality is, despite all evidence anecdotal and clinical, a choice, and therefore the good doctor has some merit to them. However, the fact is it's dick thing to do, this man may say he means well and that he's only offering a choice to those that "want to get rid of undesired homosexual feelings", but it doesn't discount the methodology, faulty science, back peddling, removal from official associations, and his complicity, willing or unwilling, in the current state of affairs in Uganda.

Though you're more colorful response has more merit than any un'rec offered.

85. A bigot does not get to 'qualify themselves'
They are qualified by their actions. Just because they give their neurosis and prejudices a pet name, 'Christ' or 'God' and then worship those flaws as idols does not mean they are not bigots or homophobes, it just means that they have constructed a mythology around their own flaws and endowed those flaws with supernatural authority. They are engaged in not just bigotry, but a self worshiping form of idol worship.
They can call themselves Saints. That does not make it so. The tree is named by the fruit it bears, that is their rule.

That's one question I'm a bit disappointed she missed that would've gotten to the heart of his real message: I'm gay & I can't come to terms with it

When she told him at the end that she wished him personal good luck, I'm sure she wanted to add '& you learn to love yourself for who you are instead of trying so hard to deny it.'

I also wish she had asked why he didn't bring at least one of the thousands of people who he bragged so much about helping go straight to tell their story so she could further reveal how ludicrous it all is!

Teh Gay are responsible for: child porn, child molesting, etc. etc. WON'T be in the next edition.

If you want to look at one small group of claims that might incite a bunch of homophobes to want to kill gay men and women, that ONE FUCKING EXCERPT WOULD BE IT. It wouldn't be surprising at all if that's the catalyst for the Ugandan bill.

Thank you, Rachel, for stepping on that roach.

A prime-time 8-hour miniseries of Rachel Maddow taking down every single pop-psych jerk who's used junk science and motivational-speaker bullshit to promote homophobia, sexism, and racism.

That goes for 'The Bell Curve' and 'Men are From Mars, Women Are From Venus' and all that kind of shit too.

She's so good at it that after she's done, there will be no further excuse for using that tripe in an internet argument ever.

That's my fantasy. It's hotter than sex.

66. You talking about Miss Candy? John Paulk
On September 19, 2000 while on a speaking tour, Paulk was spotted at Mr. P's, a Washington, D.C. gay bar. A patron recognized him and contacted Wayne Besen of the Human Rights Campaign, Truth Wins Out, and other gay political action organizations. When Besen arrived at the bar forty minutes later and confronted Paulk, he denied that he was in fact John Paulk. Upon exiting the bar, Paulk's picture was taken as documentation that he had been in the bar. When confronted by Besen about the incident and the photographs, Paulk admitted being in the bar, but stated that he didn’t know it was a gay bar and had simply stopped in for a moment to use the restroom. However, eyewitnesses reported that Paulk stayed for more than an hour, flirted with other men, and when questioned about his sexuality, said he was gay.<7><8>

Paulk was called back to Focus on the Family headquarters and was questioned by James Dobson. At first Paulk reportedly evaded a direct answer about the incident; however he later confessed that he had been in the bar for the purpose of flirting. Paulk was placed on probation, and was chaperoned on future speaking engagements to ensure that he had "support" in the event that he needed it. Dobson also removed Paulk from the Board Chair position of Exodus International. He remained on the board under probationary status only and was not allowed to attend meetings or vote.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Paulk

It never hurts to remember their names, and what damage they caused. His year of success was 1998 with the "Love Won Out" campaign, heavily promoted in newspapers, and magazines by Focus on The Family. 1998 ended with Matthew Sheppard's murder.

And I think we ignore the dangerous in our politics at our own risk. 83. Fair enough but I actually thought she did a good but not a great job--maybe an A-
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 08:32 AM by Bonn1997
I think she could have improved her arguments by doing the following:
(A) challenging his claim that he really only wants to re-orient those who would like to be re-oriented. He kept throwing into the discussion the fact that she was gay and he appeared to have a more general disdain toward homosexuals. She simply ignored him whenever he threw her orientation. I wish she had said something like, "So if I understand your position correctly, you are happy for homosexuals who--like me--are happy with and proud of their sexual orientation and you would discourage them from changing a characteristic they're happy with?" I think he'd have a hard time agreeing with that statement but if he did agree with it she could ask, "Where can I find this view of yours in your writing, or is it position you never before expressed but found convenient for this show? Perhaps she could add quotes where he says the program is for gays without adding that it's only gays who want to change. *IF*, on the other hand, he has expressed the view elsewhere that this program is only for those who would like to change their orientation, then I believe she misrepresented his position. Whether or not you agree with his views (and I don't), they should not be misrepresented.

(B) challenging him on the scientific evidence for re-orientation. I don't know if she actually read the studies in the psychological literature but she should have read them and then presented the results and asked him to explain them. She could have also discussed limitations of his own research (or whatever observations he's basing his conclusions on).

(C) asking him to explain why--if it's only psychological factors that cause homosexuality--homosexual behavior has been observed in approximately 1500 different animal species. Is it only psychological factors causing their homosexuality too? If so, what exactly are these so called psychological factors?

I do think Rachel did a reasonably good job even though I'm presenting what I think are weaknesses in her interview. I don't think she did an outstanding job, though. There was too much room for improvement IMO--too much room to have really destroyed his position.

108. I disagree -- she kept it on track.
I think it could easily have gone wayyy off into details of all sorts.

His personal "disdain" wasn't the issue -- it's the fact that he's a) a fraud; b) being used politically, and he knows it, to defend killing gay people. (Also a coward, hypocrite, and liar.)

It was enough for her to discredit him by enumerating all the organizations that have refuted and rejected his "work," and to emphasize that he holds no professional license. She got her point across -- it's quackery, and it's dangerous.

114. How would anything I said be going off track? I view as staying on track but doing so more
powerfully.
Also, I'm a fairly independent thinker who goes against the masses quite often (as an atheistic vegan). So being told a professional organization disputes someone's claims doesn't mean anything to me other than that the masses in an organization (likely simply more than 50% of a certain committee) disputed the work. Maybe it would have been a good starting point followed by actually discussing the evidence but the mere disapproval from organizations is not going to change anyone's opinion IMO. And it alone shouldn't.

He says the ex gay movement is made up of 'good, decent and moral people' and claims that theirs is a holy and religious stance. From Wikipedia: In 2002 Cohen was permanently expelled from the American Counseling Association, after it accused him of six violations of its ethics code, which bars members from actions which "seek to meet their personal needs at the expense of clients, those that exploit the trust and dependency of clients, and for soliciting testimonials or promoting products in a deceptive manner."

... I would remind this self hating basket case, that there are more passages in the bible chastising lying, false witness, boastful idolatry of God, and usury... by a biiiiiig difference, than there are mentions of homosexuality. And I am yet to see any of these evangelical jackasses even say as much as a peep against Wall Street and the damage they have done to the lives of untold numbers of people in the name of unmitigated greed. Which again, I will point out, it is discussed at far greater depth... than men laying with each other. Selective bunch, these a**holes are eh?

Because, let's face it... the "son of god" was in his 30s, single and roaming around with a dozen of single guys... in a society and time were he would have been expected to be married and popping kids for over a decade already. Maybe Jesus was the original closet case?
