Massachusetts AG Martha Coakley wins four-way Dem primary to fill Ted Kennedy's Senate seat
The torch has been passed - to a non-Kennedy.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley won a four-way Democratic primary Tuesday to fill the U.S. Senate seat held for 47 years by the late Edward Kennedy.

With more than 60% of precincts counted, the popular Coakley had 47% of the primary vote, compared with 27% for Rep. Michael Capuano, and 13% each for Stephen Pagliuca, a co-owner of the Boston Celtics, and Alan Khazei, co-founder of a national service program.

11. This morning, Mitt's buddy has slipped into fourth place.
Which just proves that money can't buy everything.

2. So the Democrats have lost a seat held by the Kennedys for over 50 years?
That pretty much says it all, even more than the failures in health care or preventing more useless war :evilfrown:

7. On one of the TV Channels today, someone was comparing or rather
putting her and Hillary together.

Earlier I had heard on MSNBC that she was more DlC than progressive.

We shall see in time.

I have taken the Wait and see attitude with all newcomers on the
hill. I watch them on C-span during the sessions to see if I can
discern where they really stand. Pay attention during "votes "
especially.

8. Her enthusiasm about RomneyCare for one
Truly a disgrace to Ted Kennedy's seat. :puke:

If actual Democrats can't hold a seat that they have held for half a century in a supposedly "liberal" state, then what hope is there?

13. Capuano was clearly the better candidate for Progressives.
But we're guardedly optimistic that Coakley won't be awful.

16. Khazei had a lot of progressive support too.
Maybe that was the problem. And selfishly, I'm happy to keep Capuano as my representative.

17. I agree that Khazei had the right positions, but he started from too far back in the field.
Capuano could have won the race but I don't think Khazei ever could have.

12. Yes, but is she a multi-millionaire?
That is an important quality in a Senator.

Of course, only someone wealthy enough to not work could ever run for senate, so I suppose I have my answer.

It's nice to see another woman in the Senate, too.
