Any one seen "The Road" yet? |
|
Just got a copy and I can't WAIT!!!
I've been waiting years for this film to be released. The way things are going, I'm wondering if it is prophetic.

referring to the one made in 1954, La Strada?

It was years in the final release, but now it's HERE! Based on Cormac McCarthy's novel by the same title. http://www.theroad-movie.com/upgrade_flash.htmlBHN

39. The movie has lightness and airiness in the trailers, at least.... |
|
The book was hatched in darkness and was utterly oppressive with threat and violence.
I have a great TV to watch when it gets to cable.
I like to laugh when I go to the movies and feel a little better when I shell out 12 bucks for a ticket.

It didn't do much for me. I think end-of-the-world films are starting to impress me less and less each time I see one.
2012 was such a crock I am ruined for the topic. I'm sure the book was better.
I am looking forward to the adaptation of The Lost Symbol.
YMMV-I'm no critic.

I watched it last night- gave me nightmares!
Mortensen is brilliant in the role. Thought he and the kid had great chemistry as actors.
Also thought the art direction is award material!
Thanks for the tip on The Lost Symbol.

52. I *hate* apocalyptic movies... hate hate hate hate HATE them |
|
(because they're possible and that's depressing... and besides, it's so much easier and more boring to be all "the future sucks" than to be uplifting and inspiring)
but I really love Viggo, who is one hell of an impressive and interesting guy in real life as well as in acting, so I'll probably rent it anyway, after/despite having read the book. I can see how that role would be an incredible tour de force and he's just the guy to do it... so understated but there's so much beneath the surface.

The focus is on the relationship of the father and the son.
It is a very dark book - even darker than Blood Meridian and No Country.
I will wait for Redbox for the movie - can't afford to go to more than one or two movies per year.
I am hoping for Blood Meridian to be made into a movie.

Seriously, seriously dark, with genuinely horrifying moments - and not in a gratuitous torture-porn way.
The acting is great throughout - Viggo Mortensen, it turns out, really is God.

Kind of one note though. I wish there had been a little more variety though it was true to the book.
(They did fill out the earlier family life more than the book but it made the good times look nearly as bad.)

but the Weinstein Company decided that it should be diverted from a wide release to a very limited one, presumably to hype the Oscar buzz. So I guess my market wasn't worthy of showing it (even though they advertised it coming to this area). http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2009/11/road-mini-wide-release.html

31. Pretty stupid move, IMO............ |
|
I imagine it'll show up around here by the end of the year or shortly thereafter, but to limit its release to (I guess) heighten the mystique, is ignorantly short-sighted for a couple reasons: 1) I seriously doubt that they'll do another ad blitz telling folks in the spurned markets that they can see it now. And, 2) the movie will invariably be spoiled for alot of folks watching TV or the internet (as someone upthread did for me). Dumb move, TWC.

It struck me as a man who writing about having a boy child later in his life, and what that meant to his masculinity. Later I looked up the author's bio, and yup - he's got a new young wife (who has obviously fulfilled her purpose) and a shiny new golden son. Worship the might of his seed! Yawn.
