Where were you when you heard John Lennon was killed. |
|
I'm sure that some weren't even born yet....even though it feels like yesterday.
I was in a Hospital room in Miami recovering from a pretty serious mysterious rash. I believe I was watching Walter Cronkite that night when I found out--- pretty sure it was Walter. I was 23.

I worked the night shift - they were playing non-stop Beatles on the radio station a coworker had turned to - someone asked, why so much Beatle music...I dunno I mused; maybe one of them is dead....DON'T SAY THAT! my coworkers said......alas, it was true

4. I was 15, and it was the morning of 12/9/80... |

My brother poked his head into my room and asked if I'd heard Lennon had been killed. Given that I listened to Double Fantasy in its entirety the night before, I was initially confused by his statement...
When I made it to school, it became clear it really happened...:(

I was quite young, let me look it up..yeah.. 2, like I thought, or almost at around the time near my birthday. too young to know this Gman, John Lennon, or rather not around the people listening to him and following him in the peace movement..God bless. God bless his soul, poor love..poor love. I love him and I never knew him. I always feel that way for admirable people of spirit and achievement in this world that strives to create change for the better.
God loves you!

I had the radio on and I heard it. My husband had a broken leg. He was in a cast. He hobbled into the kitchen to tell me he had heard in on TV. My daughter was 15 months old.

Long, terrible day, I'd conked out early. A friend called to let me know, but no one would wake me.
Next morning, I was driving and listening to Beatle song after Beatle song on the radio, and thinking this is nice...
I wasn't paying attention to the DJ yammering until I heard the phrase "last day of John Lennon's life". I nearly drove off the road. Scrabbling around the dial, everyone was talking about his death, but I couldn't find out HOW. I had to wait for the news on the half hour to find out.
Got to work, my girlfriend was already there, and she was still bawling...

class. My teacher was really disturbed by the event (as you can well imagine). I was not really into the Beatles/Lennon at the time - I am more of a Who fan. What did register for me was my teacher having Beatles/Lennon songs on throughout the day.
I do remember that my debate partner wanted to do his Senior paper on "The Catcher in the Rye" because of the event. I did my paper on Marlowe's Dr. Faustus - I had an easier time of it. Not much literary criticism on Catcher at the time - mountains on Faustus.

24. At A Radio Station... |
|
Seems like that's the only place people could find me in the late 70s and throughout the 80s. I was a Program Director of a small station...sitting in my office when the News Director came running in with a news flash from our UPI wire. At first it reported he had been shot and very few details, thus we held tight on what to report. I tried not to believe that the news was true and then to say that it was a "mere flesh wound". I went home and about an hour later got a call that said he was dead. Our station immediately began playing all Beatles...specifically John tunes for the next two days. I also rolled video of the various news reports on the teevee (that I still have). Overall a surreal day and there isn't a day that goes by where I wonder what John is thinking about this issue or that one...

I was playing in a band at the time called The Illusions -I know stupid name, wasn't my pick- and the lead guitarist and myself were working some stuff out on acoustic guitars while the Monday night game played in the background. Both of us stopped when we heard Howard Cosell mention John Lennon's name, and then we heard the news.
Without deciding on a tune, without even looking at each other, we started playing Revolution.
I still get chills when I think about it, I still tear up, I still miss him.
Thanks for posting this. I think it's time to pick up my guitar.
