Would the real Joe Lieberman please stand up?

The political party formed by Lieberman during his Senate re-election dogfight in 2006, when the incumbent resorted to an independent candidacy after being left off the Democratic ticket, is now being used as a vehicle against him in the national health care reform debate.

John Mertens, party chairman of Connecticut for Lieberman, stars in a new television commercial blasting the senator for his opposition to a public insurance option that has gone viral since it hit the airwaves this week.

"We know that Connecticut voters support (the public option) 3-1, but Joe never forgets who he ran to represent -- himself," Mertens tells viewers.

Produced and paid for by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, a liberal advocacy group, the 30-second spot has been airing on most major networks in Connecticut and during cable news programs in Washington, D.C., except for Fox News Channel. It is also posted on the Internet at allaboutjoe.org.
