You just gotta love the president, eh?
Obama:

"I support this effort, especially since it's aimed at increasing choice and competition and lowering cost," Obama said at a health-care event near the White House, attended by several Senate President Obama praised Senate Democrats. "So I want to thank all of you for sticking with it, for all those late nights, all the long weekends that you guys have put in. With so much at stake, this is well worth all of our efforts."

The response Wednesday to the compromise plan was generally positive among Democrats. But some lawmakers are raising concerns about a Medicare buy-in program for individuals age 55 and older. That proposal aims to provide an affordable coverage option for low-income older adults, but hospital and doctor groups have warned that they could be big losers, since Medicare pays much lower rates than does private insurers.

Senate Democrats are scheduled to hold a special caucus late Wednesday afternoon to discuss the status of their $848 billion health care bill. Senior Democratic aides said Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) was preparing to send a "manager's amendment" to the Congressional Budget Office for a cost analysis as early as Wednesday night. The package would wrap together all the perks, favors and other loose ends that must be resolved in Reid's quest to secure 60 votes for final passage.

The compromise came together Tuesday night as Democratic Senate negotiators struck a tentative agreement to drop the controversial government-run insurance plan from the bill, hoping that would remove a last major roadblock standing in the way of a final vote in the chamber."

14. It's a real Double-Secret Probation Plan, like the EVil Lib'rul Media
who's plan is so diabolical, they consitently implement their evil Lib'rul Agenda by laundering every Rushpublican Lie and stifling any truth that might make the Rushpublicans looks bad.

Tricky!

5. No doubt about it, if this passes in current form: we were lied to.
By Obama.

No new taxes (but we'll force you to pay several hundred a month for health care).

Thanks a lot. That should help already struggling Americans. :eyes:

15. How did you think it would be paid for? The public option was always going to
be paid for with premiums, including subsidized-premiums for lower income people. This was true for Clinton's and Edward's plans, too.

You can't add provide regular health care to tens of millions of people who have been mostly going without, except by incurring significant costs that have to be paid for in some way. Obama never lied about that.

18. Without competition, there are no cost controls. This bill does little to provide competition in the
industry, which means premiums will be too high.

Insurance companies don't have to compete with one another, because they are the only industry not bound to do so.

Many Americans cannot afford another mandatory expense forced upon them. They are BROKE. Do the math.

32. There is a difference between not agreeing with Obama's plan and pretending
that he lied and said it wouldn't cost anything. He said he wouldn't raise taxes, but he was always open about their being premiums -- and he talked about subsidies, just as the House and Senate are talking about now.

13. Please explain the "lie."
Not arguing with you. I just would like clarification of what you're saying. My understanding, and my frustration, is that the president has not taken a strong stand on the public option or anything other than pre-ex conditions and lower costs. What am I missing?

16. It's been nearly 15 years
since I've seen a doctor. Looks like it is likely to be another 5 to 10 years with this clusterfuck of an idea.

Meaningful healthcare reform is my line in the sand. We have a sitting Dem President who has majorities in both the House and the Senate. If they can't fucking deliver something better than this then they better realize I ain't voting for them next time around. The only difference between a Dem that does not advance and protect my needs and interests and a puke that does likewise is the lies they tell.

23. A lie is saying something that isn't true.
Which I'm sure you understand.

Claiming President Obama lied, for example, is an example of a lie.

President Obama would be happy to sign a bill with a strong public option, or even single payer. But President Obama is president, not congress. And congress didn't send him a bill with a strong public option.

Whether it is a good bill or a bad bill at this point. 6 months of worthless debate, tea bagger protests, and lost political capital for other agenda items and this is what the party can come up with, with complete control.

Who needs Republicans when you got friends like this.

25. He made a promise he couldn't keep, to bring universal health care before end of first term.
Something he doesn't constitutionally have the power to do, and a promise he should not have made.

...snip...

"...Our conscience cannot rest so long as nearly 45 million Americans don't have health insurance and the millions more who do are going bankrupt trying to pay for it. I have made a solemn pledge that I will sign a universal health care bill into law by the end of my first term as president that will cover every American and cut the cost of a typical family's premiums by up to $2500 a year. That's not simply a matter of policy or ideology - it's a moral commitment...."

Because only then would he be a liar.

He shouldn't need a little disclaimer on his speeches to let the voters know that congress passes bills and the president signs them.

30. I agree.
I think people need to understand the limitations on the office and I don't mind a little campaign rhetoric.

He might have added something like, "with the help of congress", but he didn't and that's ok.

I worked my ass off to help him get elected and I'm not one bit disappointed about it.

At some point I hope he'll come around to call congress on their unwillingness to get it together.

He did, after all, say "within my first term", not his first year.
