Why do Dean, Krugman, Sanders & Weiner seem to like the new healthcare compromise? |
|
These are people that carry a lot of weight with me and many others here on DU.
What do they know that we don't?

And the "compromise" has been described as very general. As a way to keep things moving, but not anywhere near a final deal.

On the other hand, aren't those guys all over 55? ;)

None are Senators and Weiner is a strong single-payer proponent.
What would drive these disparate personalities to agree on anything?

You have to be uninsured and over 55 to get in. Nobody else has any choice, they will be FORCED to pay a corporate insurance company whatever the Hell they want.

38. It's not like the public option didn't have equally arbitrary restrictions. |
|
I hate to say it, but the public option was so badly watered down it was nearly useless as it stood in the Senate. As it was going, you'd be able to get into the public option only if you were unemployed & uninsured, only if you lived in states where your governor and state legislature weren't douchebags, and only if the insurance companies were naughty (as defined by the trigger.)
Here, we're just switching to different arbitrary criteria, IIRC, you have to be over 55, you have to be uninsured (until you're 65), but there's no trigger, there's no opt-out or opt-in. I'd say that yes, the criteria's obnoxious, but it's a net win over the watered down public option.
And instead of starting a new government program, we use an existing one - Medicare.

13. Cost control regulation? Opt in Medicare? Maybe something else we don't know about. |
|
I'm still not sure how creating a bill works. But it appears that the opt-in Medicare is being added at a late enuogh stage in the bill that it's hard to remove. That was what Jane Harmon had to say, if I remember correctly.

14. Dean has a diary up at KOS |
|
And it's hardly unqualified support. Both the current Senate proposal and the House bill will give us choices that Americans did not have before. The central problem will be that not enough Americans will have those choices. So while we may be able to take big steps in the right direction – the fight for healthcare reform does not end here. We must continue to pressure Congress to pass real reform.http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/12/9/812526/-We-Can-Do-Both

|
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 10:22 PM by HughMoran
I think this Medicare expansion is exciting to him because it's implemented almost immediately - it will be good for Dems AND older people tend to need insurance even more than healthier young people. Of course, I'm still wondering what the options are for us small-business people who are getting butt-raped now. I'm sure anybody under 55 is wondering what's in in for them (the Federal Employee plan..?)

26. Weiner just told Rachel that this is a start |
|
It's a bill that expands Medicare. The whole HCR effort was to expand medical care to more people and this bill does that. That's what he cares about and he'll leave the politics to others like Sen. Thune who can have a press conference if he wants and complain. But Weiner thinks this is a start.
That's what I got from the interview that just ended. Hopefully I got it right and that others will weigh in to add more or correct my recollection.

For 50 years now, some good folks in congress have been working to get something going. By Gawd, they're doing it right now, finally.
At least now they pretty much have told the pubbies to go sit in the corner, and we'll call you when we're done.
