The American Taliban wants you to stop gambling on Christmas day
from the mullahs at the American Family Association:

Calling a halt to Christmas Day gaming
Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 12/10/2009 4:30:00 AM

A campaign is under way, working toward closing casinos and shutting down the lottery on Christmas.

Not only are casinos open, but many stores will be selling lottery tickets on Christmas Day. Les Bernal of Stop Predatory Gambling is asking the public to help put a stop to the government's hunt for dollars belonging to American citizens on a day that is meant to convey a time of peace.

"This is a government program encouraging people to lose their money and to get more into debt -- and they're kind of preying on people's hopes and doing it on Christmas Day," he contends. "It debases the true holiday spirit. This (is) the period of peace and goodwill, (yet) predatory gambling is being promoted by our government. We can't go to school that day, we can't go to the Post Office, and every other government office pretty much is closed. But the government program of predatory gambling is in full speed."

The Stop Predatory Gambling website contains a list of every casino board as well as every state lottery board in the U.S. Bernal suggests telling the organizations that if other government operations are shut down to celebrate Christmas, then gambling ought to come to a halt as well.

1. Probably not a bad idea.
This is one of the good things that religion can do- confront gambling addiction and the exploitation thereof.

6. Oy Vey ;)
It's not a holiday for me in the traditional sense either - but unless you are in a limited number of industries it's likely to be a paid day off for you. So you can decide to gamble or not on that day off as yous ee fit, and as it should be.

7. Dear American Family Association...
Kindly MYOB.
And if you think the casinos in Vegas are going to shut down for a single minute you are truly NUTS.

Here I have a better thought...
How about we shut down the WAR on Christmas Day?
How's that for an idea?
You know since you are spouting all that "This (is) the period of peace and goodwill" bull-crap.

I hate these people.

Good thing you have no idea what religious oppression actually is.

10. Damn it. If I didn't know the odds I'd go out
and gamble just to spite them.

But I won't because, as I mentioned, I know the odds of winning anything. Also I'm a cheapskate and won't spend money unless I absolutely have to.

Q3JR4.

11. yes maybe we should go back to "blue laws" ..........NOT
How about no gambling, fornication, alcohol, or shopping on any religious holiday or the Sabbath for all religions. That would give a lot of people more days home with the family. :sarcasm:

15. "Gambling is a tax on the poor" is a meme I've heard for years
coming from some of my stock market playing conservative Christian relatives. Pure bullshit as far as I can tell since not one of these dear souls can explain to me why playing the stock market is significantly different from playing the lottery.

None on my Irish Catholic relatives feel this way, most of them loved to play the ponies and slots. This sentiment comes exclusively from the Presbyterian element. Makes me glad I'm not one of the elect.

This post makes me want to buy 2 lottery tickets on Christmas day.

17. Not the poor. Just those bad at math.
I know plenty of middle class people who buy the occasional lotto ticket. Never understood the impulse.

16. Hey, a hit on the lottery would give me a LOT of peace.
Edited on Thu Dec-10-09 01:03 PM by RaleighNCDUer
I normally wouldn't buy any tickets on Christmas, as I only buy my weekly 3 tickets as I going home from work Sunday evening - but I may make an exception in this case.

I would love them to call a boycott on lottery sales, and see sales increase as a result of their boycott.
