Dog Operation Shut Down Over 'Super Breed'
Dog Operation Shut Down Over 'Super Breed'
50 Dogs Seized From Florida Property

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Palm Beach county officials have shut down a dog breeding operation run by a man who was trying to develop what he called a "super breed."

According to a news release, animal control officers shut down the man's operation on Wednesday. They entered his 24-acre property near Everglades National Park and took custody of 50 dogs.

The officers were acting on a court order.

Some of the dogs have medical and behavioral problems. About 10 puppies will be available for adoption, and officials will evaluate the other dogs to see if they are suitable candidates for new homes.

4. I wonder what the real story is.
There's no mention of neglect or abuse, or of breeding for fighting.

WHY did they shut him down?

6. failure to comply with a judge's order (to have his dogs spayed/neutered)

"Officials allege most of the dogs kept by Marinakis at his 24-acre property had limited human interaction and were primarily used for breeding purposes."

8. Possibly - but then, if he was really doing scientific breeding
it would be somewhat counter-productive to have his dogs all spayed/neutered.

A mastif/shar pei cross would be interesting, and since when is it illegal to breed for specified characteristics? Every breed today is the result of somebody doing cross breeding in the past - the "pit bull" is a breed of its own now, but was originally a cross between a bull dog and a terrier (I don't remember what kind). And, in developing a new breed it would be only natural that it would have limited human interaction, because 1) you don't want to diminish the value of the new breed before by going public with it before it is a stable, self-sustaining breed, and 2) you'd want to get some kind of baseline on how they interact with people and each other before exposing them to too many people - what if you were to find they have an explosive temper, that they are by nature nervous and bitey? That would be setting yourself up for a law suit.

Why did the judge make the order in the first place?

7. Sort of reminds me of the novel, "The Dogs of Babel"
By Carolyn Parkhurst. Did anyone read that? I got half way through and it started to upset me so I never finished the book.
