Andrea Lafferty: "Non-believers should stop trying to influence politics, and just be good people"
Good and silent.

"A few weeks ago, we wrote a post about Religious Right groups getting all worked up about an ad campaign being run by the American Humanist Association proclaiming "No God? No problem. Be good for goodness' sake."

Last night Alan Colmes had the AHA's David Niose on the program to debate Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition and it went pretty much as you would expect.

Lafferty's primary point was that if the AHA, and nonbelievers in general, want others to think they are good people, they shouldn't be running ad campaigns but instead take that money and give it to the poor, or military families, or people who are out of work. In this economy, Lafferty asserted, it was just wasteful for groups like AHA to spend money on an ad campaign. Of course, over the last few months, right-wing groups have spent millions of dollars fighting marriage equality in Maine, New Jersey, and New York instead of donating it to poor children ... but apparently that is different.

Lafferty also accused the AHA of targeting Christians by running the ads during the Holiday season and wanted to know why they weren't targeting Islam, which she asserted "was not a religion" but actually a "geo-political movement"."

2. Believers need to be true to their word, or read the frigging Bible.
What's going on makes atheists and agnostics look pure by comparison.

7. Yes, the radio and TV is just covered up with atheist programs..
AM radio in particular is a hotbed of atheists raging against the tiny theist minority.

10. Yep telling people they can be good without gods is SO FURIOUS!
Just as angry as telling people with whom you disagree that a perfect being will burn them in eternity for that reason.

5. Isn't that completely backwards?
Religious groups should stop trying to force their religious views on the country through the government, and just concentrate on being good people.

31. My answers to your questions
Lafferty is the Executive Director of the , a Religious Right organization that says it represents more than 43,000 churches. It specializes in homophobia but includes the usual Religious Right menu of other causes. Its founder has warned of a "dangerous Marxist/Leftist/Homosexual/Islamic coalition" that must be fought against.

(As a digression, can you imagine being a fly on the wall at those steering committee meetings?
Ali from Islamofascists for Worldwide Sharia: "The Marxist government in China is persecuting Muslims!"
Friedrich from the Provisional Correspondence Committee of the Fifth International: "Yeah, well, the Muslims in Saudi Arabia won't let us advocate Marxism!"
Sally from Homosexual Agenda, Inc.: "Get off your high moral horses, guys. You're both oppressing gay men and lesbians."
Pat from Progressives Against Sellouts: "Hey, folks, can we talk about IRV?")

As to whether you should care about Lafferty, well, she's not hugely important, and no one could call you underinformed if you just ignored her. But, as the OP illustrates, she does have entertainment value.

32. Gee,
If Lafferty doesn't like us putting up a few signs saying "just be good for goodness sake" there are other things we could do. Maybe we should wage billion dollar campaigns to eradicate the civil rights of others (like Lafferty's "Traditional Values Coalition" does). Or perhaps we could focus our efforts on berating minimum-wage store workers because they didn't display the proper gang signs (like the "American Family Association" does). Would that be more to Lafferty's liking? :sarcasm:

Fuck Lafferty and her twisted, hypocritical bullshit.
